Stimpson company history timeline

1852

In 1852 Stimpson was appointed zoologist on the U. S. North Pacific Exploring Expedition, and for the next three years he missed no opportunity to collect all manner of natural history specimens, especially marine invertebrates.

In 1852, the Edwin B. Stimpson Company opened a 1,500 square foot factory in Lower Manhattan at what would be, 31 years later, the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge.

1856

The collections were sent to the recently founded Smithsonian Institution, and in 1856 Stimpson came to Washington to begin sorting, classifying, and describing the marine invertebrates, a task that would occupy him for the next five years.

1865

Stimpson’s life took a decisive turn in 1865 when his closest friend among the Megatheria, the Illinois naturalist Robert Kennicott, asked him to oversee the Chicago Academy of Sciences for a year while Kennicott explored in Russian America.

1867

Kennicott died at Nulato the following year, but the reports that he and his team sent back helped to convince Congress to purchase Alaska in 1867.

1880

1906

Stimson’s public career began in 1906, when President Theodore Roosevelt appointed him to be United States attorney for the Southern District of New York.

1907

On 15 July 1907, the company became incorporated as the Edwin B. Stimpson Company in alignment with New York state law.

1911

Appointed as Secretary of War for the Taft administration in 1911, Stimson continued his predecessor and mentor Elihu Root’s efforts to reorganize and professionalize the United States Army.

1929

President Calvin Coolidge appointed Stimson Governor General of the Philippines later that year, a post that he held until he was appointed Secretary of State in March of 1929.

1931

Upon Japan’s occupation of Manchuria in 1931, Stimson articulated what later became known as the "Stimson Doctrine," that the United States would recognize no diminution of United States treaty rights brought about by aggression.

1940

The farm remained in the Stimpson family until the 1940’s when it was sold to the Grebe family.

1945

He also helped develop plans for the trial of war criminals after World War II. He retired in September of 1945.

1961

During a period of high growth, the company opened a 278,000-square foot manufacturing and distribution center in Pompano Beach, Florida in 1961 to meet increasing product demand.

1989

Barry Blechman and Michael Krepon founded the Stimson Center in 1989.

1990

Stimson’s work on peacekeeping operations began a decade earlier in 1990.

2000

In July 2000, Edwin B. Stimpson Co., Inc. and Wicks Unlimited, Inc. joined forces in a combined effort to bring the world’s candle industry a wealth of high-quality products and creative thinking.

In July 2000, the company acquired Wicks Unlimited.

2016

Stimson is ranked 21st best United States think tank in the University of Pennsylvania ‘s 2016 Global Go To Think Tanks Report

2017

The Environmental Security program advises the hosts of the 2017 Our Oceans Conference in Malta, where participants made 433 commitments valued at over $7B Euro.
