Story County Sheriff history

The first frame school house built in the county, as claimed, was located in the northeast corner of section 1, township 82, range 24, and was the renowned "Walnut Grove School House," built in 1854-5.

The first, a two-level frame building, was erected in 1856.

The Methodist Episcopal Society was organized in 1862, in the township, consisting at first of only six members.

The first railroad came to the county in 1864.

These were the improvements made during the fall and winter of 1865-6.

The Weekly Intelligencer, a live paper, was first published by Mr. Its first issue was about April, 1868"”nineteen years ago"”and is still being published.

There is a new church house, built in 1886, in the southwest corner of the northwest quarter of section 25, township 83, range 24.

In 1998 voters approved a bond referendum of up to $12.7 million to build a new Justice Center, which included renovation of the former courthouse now called the Administration building.

The current courthouse, the Story County Justice Center, opened in 2002.

Story County Sheriff's Office is located in Nevada, Iowa, and was founded in 2003.

At the end of fiscal year 2015, the sheriff's office returned $71,234.97 of its total budget of $7.7 million, according to Fitzgerald's annual report.
