Story editors are responsible for selecting and securing written materials and supervising staff writers who prepare scripts to be used for television or motion picture productions. They review and evaluate writers' work developed during previous associations, samples presented by agents, and material received from other sources to select writers. They also recommend the purchase of material judged to be suitable in developing scripts.

Story editors earn an average salary of $54,000 annually or $26 per hour. They perform some duties which include working closely with the writer to ensure that the draft that is produced ensures that practical issues such as continuity and running time are adhered to. They also supervise the screenwriting staff and edit the screenplay while ensuring the script is properly conducted in a way that keeps it in time with the appropriate continuity and run time.

Story editors typically hold a bachelor's degree in photography, communication, journalism, or other related fields. They are expected to have proven experience as an editor or in a similar role. Some employers prefer candidates with excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
