2009

Square is also one of the competitors of Stripe. It is headquartered at San Francisco, California, USA. Founded in 2009, Square also works in the Fintech space.

2010

Stripe was founded in 2010 by Irish entrepreneurs Patrick and John Collison.

John and Patrick first started working on Stripe in early 2010.

In early 2010 John and Patrick began working on Stripe together.

In 2010 he co-founded Commonred which was acquired by Income.com.

In 2010, the brothers dropped out of college and launched Stripe in San Francisco with seed funding from accelerator Y Combinator.

2011

On 17 January 2011, a baker called Abdou Abdel Monaam set himself on fire in the port city of Alexandria over the price of bread, sparking an uprising that kickstarted Egypt’s Arab Spring and led to the fall of President Hosni Mubarak’s government.

A year later, in May of 2011, Stripe received a $2 million investment from Sequoia Capital, Peter Thiel and Adreessen Horowtiz.

In June of 2011, roughly 18-months after the company began, the first designer joined the team and synced the brand and messaging which lives throughout their product and website.

2012

In February of 2012, Stripe received another $18 million investment, mainly by Sequoia Capital as Series-A investment, after an evaluation of almost $100 million.

2014

In 2014, he moved to Berlin for a couple of years Berlin to earn some cash as a coder and there the startup philosophy was, as he puts it, “reach the first million in your user base, and then see how you can monetise.

2015

On July 28th, 2015 Stripe announced even bigger news: a strategic partnership and investment from Visa that will help Visa provide a better online and mobile experiences, while Stripe will benefit from Visa's technical tools, like tokenization used to anonimize user transactions, and global reach.

2016

At its core was the ambition to “increase the GDP of the internet,” according to Patrick in his February 2016 launch speech at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Then, in 2016, the government devalued the Egyptian pound to secure a $12 billion loan from the International Monetary Fund, prompting soaring inflation and rising borrowing costs.

2018

Businesses can process payments across online, mobile and in-store (POS) with over 250 payment methods and 187 currencies” – has 23 fans, is a favourite for 11 developers and has some 39 upvotes as of July 2018.

It last raised funding in September 2018.

2021

The last funding round that the company saw came on 14th July 2021.

October 21, 2021 - Stripe is all set to see its first acquisition where the company is in talks to acquire the India-based payments reconciliation company, Recko.
