1982 – Autodesk Co. introduced AutoCAD, which is still among the most widely used CAD programs used by structural engineers these days.
In 1984 the Met Section established the Roebling Award for eminence in the design and rehabilitation of bridges throughout the world.
The first departmental split occurred in EECS in 1987 with the formation of the Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) and Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) departments.
Changes in the AMES department started in 1989 when the Systems Science Group moved from AMES to the ECE department.
In 1993 the structural engineering group formed a separate cost center for Structural Systems Research directly under the School of Engineering with independent administration from the AMES department except for faculty and teaching matters.
The first departmental spin-off in AMES came in 1994 with the formation of the Bioengineering department which left AMES with mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, and structural engineering groups.
In 1995 three separate departmental divisions were formed, namely a Division of Mechanical Engineering, a Division of Structural Engineering, and a Division of Chemical Engineering.
The Structures Group later established the Homer Gage Balcom Award in 1996 to honor an individual for a lifetime of achievement in the structural engineering of buildings or special structures.
Our History In 2009, Haines Structural Group began in Knoxville as a branch office of Chad Stewart & Associates, Inc. based out of Memphis, TN. The branch office was formed to better serve existing clients in the East Tennessee region.
In 2017, Bobby Haines acquired the Knoxville office and separated from Chad Stewart & Associates As new owner and president of the Knoxville office, Mr.
In 2019, after a decade of serving Knoxville and the East Tennessee region, the business was rebranded to Haines Structural Group to better define the purpose, mission, and vision of the organization.
