At VEG we find a way to say yes to the career you want in veterinary emergency medicine. This means transforming how ER works, from our open-concept hospitals, where you can handle emergency cases of every kind (even exotics!) to our immersive, customer-focused experience, which helps us give people and their pets the care they deserve.
This also means saying yes to creating the greatest experience possible for our VEGgies. Yes to working in an environment where you can find your place and feel valued for the amazing work you do. Experience the teamwork, pace, and heart that defines emergency care at VEG

DVM Student Externship/Preceptorship Program - Family Pet Clinic
Family Pet Clinic
Student assistant job in Feasterville, PA
We're making an investment in the next generation of veterinary doctors!
As part of the professional veterinary curriculum, colleges encourage off-campus educational experiences in practices outside of the teaching hospital. Practical experience in a well-run and contemporary practice can be a valuable component of your veterinary education, preparing you to deliver better care after graduation. Our program is dedicated to contributing to your practice-readiness and to help you hit the ground running after graduation.
Our program structure:
Our externships are flexible-they can range from two to eight weeks during the year, according to your college curriculum - but are typically two or three weeks in length. Your schedule will include days, evenings and weekends.
Our externship rotations are designed to allow students, under veterinary supervision, to practice the problem-solving, technical and communication skills that they have acquired during their clinical preparation. Externs are given the opportunity to work alongside our veterinary team and are encouraged to participate in all aspects of patient care. A stipend of $250 per week will be provided.
What you'll be doing:
Externs experience the typical caseload of a small animal practice. Under the supervision of your mentor doctor you will gather histories, perform physical examinations, develop diagnostic and therapeutic plans, scrub in to surgery, assist in the management of medical cases, provide wellness care, develop your client communication skills, polish your technical skills and produce appropriate medical records (SOAPs) within the time limits of daily practice.
Who we're looking for:
Extern students are expected to be enthusiastic and effective participants in our patient care activities, upholding the professional and ethical standards of our practice. Students participating in the externship program are suggested to review the Veterinary Practice Act in regard to the scope of duties that may be performed, and to be familiar with the type and degree of veterinary supervision that is required. These should be followed carefully in order to protect both yourself and our practice.
As a veterinary student extern, we expect you to dress and behave in a professional manner and to meet the expectations that we have of all team members as outlined in our employee handbook.
Requirements:
Be enrolled in an accredited DVM program.
You are authorized to work in the United States.
You must carry professional liability insurance. AVMA PLIT liability insurance is free for all student members of the AVMA. You may apply for this coverage on their website. Please check to make sure your coverage is current and submit a certificate of coverage with your application.
About us:
As sponsors of the Veterinary Externship Program, we see ourselves to be part of your educational team, providing instruction, mentoring and evaluation of the students who participate. You will be assigned a mentor and work on the learning objectives as defined by your college program or to meet your specific goals. At the end of the externship your mentor will provide a written evaluation of your performance as required by your college program.
We look forward to working with you!

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the dates of the Summer 2026 internship? Are those dates flexible?
The internship is a 10-week program from Monday, June 1, 2026, to Friday, August 7, 2026.
Students are generally allowed reasonable flexibility for family or other obligations, so long as they complete the ten-week program and are compliant with the terms of any work study or other external funding they receive. There is a week of mandatory orientation the week of June 1-5, 2026.
Is the internship funded?
Generally the internship is unpaid. However, 3 fellowship stipends are available and awarded on a rolling basis. Please see below for more information. We are also happy to support any requirements for work study or other external funding sources, like Equal Justice America.
What are the work hours? What are the in-person requirements?
CLS operates Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Staff are expected to work in-person 2 days per week; however, students are encouraged to be in person more frequently as needed and to get the most out of their summer.
Do I get to choose which unit I work with? Can I work across multiple units?
Unit placements are assigned when we have filled our full class of interns - usually in April. When students accept their internship, they rank their top 3 units. With rare exceptions, we are able to place students in one of their top 3 choices but cannot guarantee placement in any unit.
Students are encouraged to staff CLS clinics for other units and can shadow another unit if they express an interest, but are generally assigned to one unit for the entirety of their summer work.
What if I want to work in the Housing Unit?
Our housing unit prioritizes 2L students, especially from Philadelphia-area law schools. We encourage housing-focused students to apply for their 2L summer!
What if I am not a law student? What if I am a law student and would like to intern during the fall or spring semester?
Please contact our HR department by emailing Shaneika Patterson at [email protected] and/or Crystal Stackhouse at [email protected].
Additional Fellowship Application
The Amber Racine and Senator Roxanne Jones Fellowships are available on a competitive basis to 3 law students with financial need from underrepresented groups based on race, color, religious creed, ancestry, age, sex (including sex assigned at birth, gender identity or expression and sexual orientation), national origin, or disability. The recipient of each Fellowship receives a financial award of $5,000 and mentorship support to enable future leaders in public interest law to spend their summer interning at CLS.
Eligible law students should apply for the Fellowships when they submit their application for CLS's summer internship. Fellowship selection will take place on a rolling basis, so students are encouraged to apply early.

Veterinary Technician Student Externship - Northern Liberties, PA
Veterinary Emergency Group
Student assistant job in Philadelphia, PA
ABOUT VEG In 2014, VEG was born with a mission to help people and their pets when they need it most. This meant challenging the status quo and fixing everything that was wrong with the ER experience. Since then, we've expanded rapidly, with hospitals nationwide open 24/7, 365 days a year, and created a better emergency experience-not only for people and their pets, but also for everyone who works here-our VEGgies!
Yes to having unparalleled opportunities for learning and mentorship so you can grow where you want to go in your career. And yes to making an impact here in ways you never thought possible.
VEG is a 2025 and 2026 certified Great Place to Work.
THE PROGRAM
At VEG we find a way to say yes to helping future veterinary technicians grow into their potential. Our Veterinary Technician Student Externship Program offers a hands-on, immersive experience in emergency medicine alongside our credentialed emergency veterinary technicians.
You won't just observe-you'll engage. You'll get close to the action, ask questions, try new techniques, and explore everything that excites you about life in the ER. From patient triage to diagnostics to inpatient care, you'll gain exposure to what emergency medicine is really like-and explore whether it's the future you want to chase. This is your chance to build a strong foundation, get inspired, and be a part of something bigger.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
* Learn from the top emergency veterinary professionals in the business.
* Pair up with an emergency credentialed veterinary technician for real-time mentoring and on-the-floor learning
* Shadow and assist with triage, outpatient visits, diagnostics, anesthesia, inpatient care, and more
* Practice skills required by your school's proficiency checklist with mentorship and guidance
* Experience the teamwork, pace, and heart that defines emergency care at VEG
* Explore whether or not being an ER superhero is what you want to do next
WHAT YOU NEED
* Currently enrolled in an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology or nursing program, or a program actively seeking accreditation; this program is only for students, not future veterinarians or veterinary assistants
* Enrolled in a course that requires externship hours or skills
* Able to start the program within six months of application
* Current rabies vaccination or titer required
* Ability to stand for prolonged hours, kneel, and work on the floor as well as ability to lift up to 25 kg on own and able to support up to 40 kg with assistance
* Must be willing to work in a noisy environment with strong or unpleasant odors
* Work well in a fast-paced environment with people from all backgrounds and different personality types
WHO YOU ARE
* Empathetic, instinctively taking a people-centric approach, whether supporting your colleagues or making an effort to understand different perspectives
* Have a sense of humility; acknowledging mistakes, sharing credit with others, and lifting up your team's' accomplishments
* Feel a strong sense of ownership over your work, taking responsibility for outcomes and staying committed to achieving long-term, impactful results
* Curious by nature; you ask insightful questions and continuously seek out opportunities to learn and grow your skills and knowledge
HOW WE INVEST IN YOU
* Flexibility: You choose the length of your externship based on your program requirements.
* Location: You pick the VEG hospital that works best for you (based on availability).
* Mentorship: You'll be supported by a credentialed veterinary technician throughout your externship.
* Immersion: You'll be fully engaged in the fast-paced, hands-on world of emergency medicine.
* Future opportunities: We love hiring former externs! If you fall in love with VEG, we'll be the first to help you find a role when you're ready.
Note: This is an unpaid externship opportunity.
DEI
At VEG, diversity is not just a word-it's a strength that fuels innovation and kindness. Our mission is "Helping people and their pets when they need it most." And we do that better when our VEGgies (employees) feel valued, respected, and empowered to bring their authentic selves to work. That's why we're devoted to creating an environment that reflects the diverse communities we serve-where different perspectives are not only welcomed but celebrated.
We are focused on providing equitable opportunities for growth, promoting inclusive decision-making, and ensuring that everyone's perspective is considered. Saying yes to VEG means helping us build a culture where your unique experiences and background contribute to a shared vision: being the world's veterinary emergency company.
