As part of the professional veterinary curriculum, colleges encourage off-campus educational experiences in practices outside of the teaching hospital. Practical experience in a well-run and contemporary practice can be a valuable component of your veterinary education, preparing you to deliver better care after graduation. Our program is dedicated to contributing to your practice-readiness and to help you hit the ground running after graduation. Our program structure: Our externships are flexible-they can range from two to eight weeks during the year, according to your college curriculum - but are typically two or three weeks in length. Your schedule will include days, evenings and weekends. Our externship rotations are designed to allow students, under veterinary supervision, to practice the problem-solving, technical and communication skills that they have acquired during their clinical preparation. Job DescriptionDescriptionThe primary purpose of our Veterinary Student Externship is to provide a hands-on learning experience for 3rd and 4th year students who are enrolled in a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program. The program is typically scheduled for 2-week blocks at our hospital. We feel that the students who possess an open mind and a willingness to learn will benefit the most from our externship. Key ResponsibilitiesThe Veterinary Student Extern is responsible for performing inpatient and outpatient medical care under the direct supervision of our veterinary staff. They will be expected to perform in-house diagnostic tests (hematology, chemistry, and radiology) with competence, perform routine client education, and to assist in surgical procedures. Skills, Knowledge, and ExpertiseParticipants in the Veterinary Extern Program must currently be enrolled in an AVMA-accredited Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Program.

ABOUT THE EXTERNSHIP VEG's Veterinary Technician/Nursing Student Externship Program gives vet tech/nursing students hands-on experience in emergency medicine while working alongside our credentialed, emergency veterinary technicians. Students will focus on honing their emergency skills including obtaining patient vitals, processing laboratory samples, caring for hospitalized patients, triaging emerging cases, and collaborating in a fast-paced environment. If you're as interested in emergency medicine as we are, we'd love to have you! Note: Unless you are already employed by us, this is an unpaid externship. Rabies vaccinations are required for all externs (even if you are already employed by us) since you may be handling pets with an unknown rabies vaccination status. Flexibility: YOU Choose the length of your externship to meet your school's requirements Location: YOU choose where you'd like to extern (depending on hospital bandwidth) Mentorship: YOU will be supported by a credentialed veterinary technician Focus: YOU will be fully-immersed in what emergency medicine truly entails REQUIREMENTS Currently enrolled in an AVMA CVTEA accredited veterinary technology or veterinary nursing program (or one actively seeking accreditation) and will be in a class that requires externship hours and/or skills. This application is not for veterinary students or veterinary assistant students - only veterinary technology or veterinary nursing students. Your externship must need to begin within 6 months of application. You must be vaccinated for rabies unless your school's rabies mitigation policy allows unvaccinated students to handle unvaccinated animals.
