We're making an investment in the next generation of veterinary doctors! As part of the professional veterinary curriculum, colleges encourage off-campus educational experiences in practices outside of the teaching hospital. Practical experience in a well-run and contemporary practice can be a valuable component of your veterinary education, preparing you to deliver better care after graduation. Our program is dedicated to contributing to your practice-readiness and to help you hit the ground running after graduation. Our program structure: Our externships are flexible-they can range from two to eight weeks during the year, according to your college curriculum - but are typically two or three weeks in length. Your schedule will include days, evenings and weekends. Our externship rotations are designed to allow students, under veterinary supervision, to practice the problem-solving, technical and communication skills that they have acquired during their clinical preparation. Externs are given the opportunity to work alongside our veterinary team and are encouraged to participate in all aspects of patient care. A stipend of $250 per week will be provided. What you'll be doing: Externs experience the typical caseload of a small animal practice. Under the supervision of your mentor doctor you will gather histories, perform physical examinations, develop diagnostic and therapeutic plans, scrub in to surgery, assist in the management of medical cases, provide wellness care, develop your client communication skills, polish your technical skills and produce appropriate medical records (SOAPs) within the time limits of daily practice. Who we're looking for: Extern students are expected to be enthusiastic and effective participants in our patient care activities, upholding the professional and ethical standards of our practice. Students participating in the externship program are suggested to review the Veterinary Practice Act in regard to the scope of duties that may be performed, and to be familiar with the type and degree of veterinary supervision that is required. These should be followed carefully in order to protect both yourself and our practice. Updated Treatment Plans are due no less than every 90 days to supervisor for review and sent to referral source by pre-arranged due dates. If applicable, complete visitation/parenting time logs and send to referral sources within 48 hours of services rendered ensuring all required sections of log are compliance with current state content standards. Oversee completion of program required assessments, including but not limited to, PFS-2, NCFAS, IARCA packets upon admission, discharge, three month and six-month follow-up. Record all billable/direct and non-billable/indirect time on a daily basis, utilizing the established database while ensuring an accurate timesheet is maintained. Maintain client files ensuring all required documents are in place adhering to the GJR in Indiana file checklist for each respective service being rendered. Submit and correct file audit identified issues within 7 days of receiving feedback from audits. Document use of and adherence to evidence-based models and treatment for all services requiring use of a model that has been approved by the state of Indiana and GJR. Obtain and submit requests for court appearances to Compliance Coordinator monthly by deadline established. Appear at court hearings, case conferences, CFTM's or staffing as necessary or requested by referral source or supervisor. IndyVet Veterinary Student Externship Program IndyVet is a progressive specialty and emergency hospital that embraces a culture of mutual respect and teamwork while providing outstanding patient care and customer service. At IndyVet we put patient care first and believe in doing so through integrated clinical practice. Currently, we have specialists in critical care, surgery, internal medicine, oncology, and ophthalmology. We offer an externship program for all veterinary students. Most externship experiences at IndyVet Emergency and Specialty Hospital range from two to eight weeks depending on student and hospital schedules. All Veterinary students (regardless of class year) are encouraged to participate in Ethos externships, though preference may be given to students in their final two year(s) of veterinary school. At IndyVet we are committed to lifelong learning. Our objective is to educate veterinary student externs by providing learning opportunities that will build upon the extern's knowledge base and clinical skills. We are a busy emergency and specialty hospital with high case load. Boarded specialists, experienced emergency clinicians, and interns are all involved in teaching visiting students.
