KSN is looking for an upper-level college student who is ready to jump into the world of TV news. We are looking for someone who has taken journalism classes and has some writing experience. Experience with collegiate TV production is not necessary, but great if you have it! Previous experience with print-based journalism also a plus. Internship will include working with multiple team members to learn many different skills in the newsroom (including shadowing producers, reporters, photographers, editors and other newsroom team members). Our ten-month internship is designed for individuals eager to learn, engage with park guests, and assist in animal care across our diverse zookeeping teams. Interns will be on a daily rotation with 3 of our 5 animal care teams, allowing them to gain specialized experience. Additionally interns will have the chance to volunteer with all 5 care teams, providing a comprehensive experience across various animal species and care practices. With opportunities for hands-on learning, professional development, and guest interactions, this internship is perfect for those interested in pursuing a zookeeping, conservation, or wildlife-education career.
If you love watching guests feed lettuce to a giraffe, helping kids connect with lorikeets, chopping carrots, talking to guests about animals, and assisting keepers in daily husbandry and care then you need to spend the season with us!

What You'll Do
Animal Encounter Stations
Guest Engagement: Create memorable, safe, and educational encounters with animals, including giraffes, kangaroos, lorikeets, and more.
Educational Guidance: Share engaging facts and conservation information with guests, while ensuring encounters are safe for both animals and people.
Animal Encounter Stations: Prepare food, assist guests during feedings, and oversee interactions to ensure a safe experience.
Station Upkeep: Maintain the cleanliness and organization of each station.
Zookeeper Assistance
Morning and Afternoon Rounds: Spend 30 minutes to an hour each morning and afternoon with the zookeeping team, assisting with tasks such as food preparation, cleaning, and daily animal checks. Opportunities will be available to earn full paid days with keepers.
Tanganyika Keeper Teams are BRAVO (birds, roos, education animals, children's zoo, primates), Carnivores, Hoofstock, and TMC (penguins, otters, sloths, armadillos, primates).
Volunteer Opportunities
Interns will have the chance to work alongside all 5 care teams at the park, even if the team is not selected for the interns rotation.
Participate in special projects, routine animal care, and enrichment activities that enhance animal welfare and guest experiences.

* Performs other cleaning duties as specified in schedule
* Refills paper towel, tissue, toilet paper and hand soap in all dispensers
* Need for cleaning supplies or equipment repair in advance
* All other health and safety hazards noticed; participates in emergency drills and environmental safety activities, as requested

Required Education
High School diploma or equivalent. Enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours at Wichita State University.
Additional Requirements
* Applicants must be enrolled as a WSU student for the semester they are applying to work.
* Applicants must be in good conduct standing with the University (not on probation) in order to apply for the student position. If the staff member becomes not in good standing during the course of employment, they could be asked to leave the position.
* Student staff members are hired for the summer season. Student staff showing exceptional work may be offered an academic year student position.
* The first 30 days of a student staff member's contract period are to be considered probationary. Staff members not making satisfactory progress at the end of 30 days may be released from their position.
* Any position offers are contingent upon the successful completion of a university background check.
* Student staff members are expected to continue positive academic progress by:
a. Having a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or greater at the time they apply for the position and at the end of the spring or fall semester prior to beginning the position.
b. Receiving a semester GPA of 2.5 or greater as well as maintaining a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or greater. Staff who do not achieve these standards will be placed on HRL Academic Probation for the following semester. Staff below the 2.0 GPA should consult with the supervisor to determine if continued standing as a Student Staff member is in their best interest.
c. HRL Academic Probation may only be used once during any 24-month period of time. If a staff member returns from academic probation and fails to meet requirements again within twelve months, they will not be permitted to continue in any HRL position.
* Student staff members must be enrolled as a full-time student (12 credits or more undergraduate and 9 hours graduate) and making academic progress toward graduation.
