Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, the Student Nurse Technician performs delegated functions as a member of a patient care team to provide a variety of services. These activities contribute to meeting the health care, safety and comfort needs of patients, and are performed in accordance with all existing regulatory and hospital standards, policies and procedures. Reports to Unit Manager.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

Enrollment in an accredited BSN nursing program

Strongly prefer a genuine interest and commitment to a career in Critical Care / ICU

Minimum 16 hours worked per month for the entire year - this is not a temporary summer position

Ability to read, write, and speak English and perform basic mathematics

Physical efforts as specified by Position Physical Requirements and Occupational Health Exposure form

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills [verbal, written and listening].

Ability to relate to different cultural and economic background

The Student Nurse Tech position is an opportunity to learn Emergency Department operations and deliver patient care while you attend nursing school. The Student Nurse Technician in the Emergency Department assists with basic patient care activities and performs administrative and clerical duties while obtaining competencies for performing new techniques or skills required of the position.
Student Nurse Tech Emergency Department Job Functions:

* Provides patient care in the provision of routine hygienic, nutritional, and comfort needs of patients such as, but not limited to: bathing, distributing fluids and nourishments, feeding, ambulating, changing bed linens, oral care, grooming, shampooing hair, toileting, etc.

* Performs basic nursing support tasks such as but not limited to: obtaining vital signs, answering call lights, transporting (i.e. patients, specimens, etc.), assisting with patient transfers, and range of motion.

* May assist with keeping patient rooms clean and orderly as well as provide observation as a sitter when needed.

* May receive and screen visitors and telephone calls and handle general inquiries. Files, distributes mail and performs other clerical duties as assigned. Types various reports and documents for unit staff. Photocopies and distributes and/or files as necessary.

* Communicates clearly with patients, families, physicians and other healthcare team members in person, telephone, and/or email.

* Assists with the maintenance of supplies and equipment.

* Minimum Education: High School diploma or equivalent; actively enrolled in an accredited ASN or BSN nursing program

* Minimum Experience: Completion of one semester of clinicals

* Preferred Experience: One year experience in a hospital setting

Responsibilities

We are looking for valued employees who will be Champions of the Select Medical Way, which includes putting the patient first, helping to improve quality of life for the community in which you live and work, continuing to develop and explore new ideas, providing high-quality care and doing well by doing what is right.

In this role, you will provided basic patient care and may perform specific procedures as outlined by the facility under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse. You will perform procedures and collect and document demographic and patient data.

* Obtaining vital signs, height, weight and demographic data.
* Assisting patients with personal and daily care, such as bathing (bed bath, chair at sink, tub and shower), oral hygiene, shaving and hair care.
* Assisting with urinary catheter removal, finger stick blood sugars, routine urine and stool specimen collection, ostomy care, emptying drainage receptacles/tubes, bladder scan.
* Removing peripheral IV's as directed by RN (may not remove any IV's located in antecubital fossa or higher).
* Delivering meals and snacks, feeding patients who are unable to feed themselves and documenting oral intake, including supplements.
* Turning and positioning immobile patients safely while maintaining proper body alignment; participating in mobility program.
* Answering patient call lights and performing services that add to the physical well-being of the patient.
* Transportation of the patients to designated areas, such as to and from various treatment centers.

You will demonstrate an understanding of patient needs, ensuring that each patient feels informed and understood, as well as heard. You are passionate about providing superior quality care and you are an inventive problem solver who thrives in a dynamic environment.

Minimum requirements:

* This position requires current enrollment in an accredited nursing school (ADN or BSN program) and must provide proof of completion of the first year/fundamentals of nursing, (or equivalent).
* Knowledge of basic nursing techniques and procedures and aseptic practices is required.
* This position requires the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, to follow written and verbal instructions, and to maintain effective working relations with others including patients, families, physicians and other hospital associates.
* BLS required.
