Duties and Responsibilities Assists Education Program Administrator in preparation of lesson plans curriculum development and selection of texts, graphics and visual aids related in the instructional materials. Assists with interviews, evaluation and placement of inmates entering the Department of Correction's GED Program; and determines the best practices to utilize and collect educational background/additional subject materials and assesses their educational needs and assists with identifying the best possible path to GED success. Provides formalized classroom instruction in a variety of academic subjects in an adult basic education program to include classes in remedial Reading and Arithmetic, English and social Studies on a daily basis to a controlled population. Provides guidance and counseling relative to meeting the academic, vocational and personal needs of assigned inmates. Prepares lesson plans, select, adapts, and /or develops text and related material such as visual aids and testing instruments for use in the classroom to promote the attention of unmotivated students, as well as maintain and increase the performance of the other students. Serves as student counselor or education coordinator. Assist Spanish speaking inmates by interpreting or explaining procedures, documents, etc., from English into Spanish and serves as an interpreter when required. Professional knowledge of the theories, principles and techniques of teaching adults who are deficient in literacy and life skills training. Analytical skills to translate policies and procedures into effective training methodologies geared to the accomplishment of goals and objectives as required. Must have knowledge of English and Spanish language and the ability to speak/translate Spanish. Ability to communicate effectively and fluently in both English and in Spanish and excellent oral and writing skill to articulate/interpret to bilingual inmates. Must have the ability to diagnose reading deficiencies and apply corrective techniques in teaching improved reading. Skill in use of technology as programmed instruction, audiovisual aids, etc. Skill in counseling for academic or vocational education and training, and knowledge of administration of appropriate educational tests in order to determine guidance indicated and understanding the needs of individual students. Qualifications and Education Bachelor's Degree from an accredited or pre-accredited institution that included how it was supplemented by supervised student teaching, and at least one course in each of the following areas: general psychology, human development history and/or philosophy of education, and teaching methods at the learning level of the position to be filled.
