StumbleUpon company history timeline

2001

StumbleUpon was founded in November 2001 by Garrett Camp, Geoff Smith, Justin LaFrance and Eric Boyd during Camp's time in graduate school at the University of Calgary.

2002

The company was incepted in the year 2002 by Garrett Camp and Geoff Smith during their post- graduation days.

2007

It was in 2009 when once again the primary owners Garrett Camp and Geoff Smith along with several other investors acquired the ownership back. It was in the year 2007 when eBay acquired StumbleUpon for $75million.

2009

It was in 2009 when once again the primary owners Garrett Camp and Geoff Smith along with several other investors acquired the ownership back.

2011

In 2011, the website removed content generated by users during years of service, including HTML blogs and photography, stating that it cannot run a successful blogging platform at the same time as operating the discovery search engine.

2012

On September 25, 2012, StumbleUpon released a redesign of its website in beta, and extended it to all users on October 24.

2013

On January 16, 2013, StumbleUpon confirmed it had laid off 30% of their staff from 110 to 75 employees.

However, the platform has not been untouched by the volatility of tech businesses, and the company had to let go of almost a third of its staff in 2013.

2015

In August 2015, StumbleUpon was in financial debt and was re-acquired by Garrett Camp, who re-gained a majority share of the company.

2018

StumbleUpon was shut down in June 2018 and its accounts were transitioned to Mix.com, another content discovery venture built in part through Camp's studio startup company, Expa.
