Your Job as a Substance Use Counselor:
The Substance Use Counselor is instrumental in our patient's treatment and recovery from opioid use disorder. Substance Use Counselors provide high quality, compassionate care through various mediums which include both individual and group counseling sessions.
Job Responsibilities:
Provide high quality, compassionate guidance in both individual and group counseling sessions.
Plan, oversee, facilitate and document patient's recovery.
Co-facilitate assigned group or family sessions as needed.
Ensure all documentation regarding patient care, treatment, and incidents is completed timely and in a clear, concise manner.
Prepare individual treatment plans for each assigned patient.
Initial assessments as well as follow up assessments.
Evaluate patient needs and determine if referrals to other programs or facilities are needed.
May plan for aftercare for assigned patients.
Provide crisis intervention to patients, as needed.
Provide case management duties for patients, ensuring individualized quality care as needed.
Act as a liaison between referral sources and patients, as needed.
Compensation for roles at Riverside CTC varies depending on a wide array of factors including but not limited to the specific location, role, skill set, and level of experience. As required by local law, Riverside CTC provides a reasonable hourly range of compensation for roles that may be hired in California as set forth below.
Role Location: California
Calculated Salary Range for role: $26.27 - $31.82 per hour.

Required Education, Skills, and Qualifications:
HS graduate or equivalent required;
Prefer Bachelor's or Master's degree in social or health services field;
Degree must be from an accredited college or university.
Previous experience in addiction recovery or behavioral health settings, such as outpatient, residential, or correctional facilities.
* Familiarity with Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT), including methadone, buprenorphine, and naltrexone.
* Experience conducting individual and group counseling sessions focused on substance use recovery.
* Knowledge of evidence-based practices, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), and relapse prevention techniques.
* Documentation experience, including maintaining clinical notes, treatment plans, and progress updates in accordance with state and federal guidelines.
* Familiarity with state regulatory standards (e.g., 42 CFR Part 2, HIPAA, Joint Commission standards).
* Experience collaborating in a multidisciplinary team with medical staff, case managers, and peer support specialists.
Required Licenses/Certifications:
AOD Registration is required.
AOD Certification is preferred.
Registration/Certification must be obtained from a California-approved Counselor Certification Organization (CAADE, CADTP or CCAPP).

What You Will Do

Position Purpose:
The Substance Use Counselor (SUC) will have a strong background in Chemical Dependency and Behavioral Health and a strong desire to work with patients who may have co-occurring disorders. The SUC will be part of a multidisciplinary team of LCSW's, Case Managers, Primary Care Providers, Psychiatry, and other Counselors. The SUC will provide counseling services to an ethnically diverse population, including low-income and homeless patients at various JWCH locations. Principal Responsibilities:
- Utilizes compassion and understanding of harm reduction to aid patients seeking treatment for opioid, alcohol, and other substance use in an outpatient primary care setting.
- Provides extensive knowledge and education to patients, family, and community members for different FDA approved medications designed to treat those with opioid or alcohol use disorder.
- Works directly with Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) Providers, Behavioral Health Workers, and other Care Team members to design and determine comprehensive care needs.
- Accepts referrals from medical and behavioral health staff and community-based organizations to administer assessments outlined by DSM IV to determine level of care, offer a menu of options, and link to appropriate care services.
- Provides intensive case management and psychosocial support to those entering the MAT or general counseling program to ensure engagement, retention, and better treatment outcomes.
- Provides counseling through evidence-based practices such as Seeking Safety, Relapse Prevention and CBT concurrently with medication management to enhance treatment outcomes.
- Navigates patients through treatment including reminders for appointments and medication management.
- Collaborates with outside agencies to offer referral options.
- Documents accurately and timely in medical records.
- Enters data for project evaluation and analysis, helps to prepare reports for grants, and ensures collected data is securely kept/maintained.

About the Position:Certified SubstanceAbuseCounselors are responsible for providing group and individual sessions and related rehabilitative treatment services to substanceabuse students in a residential setting. Provides direct services and related rehabilitative treatment services to substanceabuse students in a therapeutic community setting.

What You Will Do:Leads and participates in group, individual, and therapeutic processes under the supervision of a certified behavioral health professional. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
One year of experience in a substanceabuse program with experience providing physical assessment of patients, counseling of individuals, families and groups, and documentation.

Job Summary
The SubstanceAbuseCounselor works as a team of the multi-disciplinary homeless street outreach team, in collaboration with social service professionals, ensuring the delivery of quality care in accordance to the rules and regulations established by the Los Angeles Department of Health Services for contracted agencies, as well as adhering to the mission of St. Joseph Center. The E6 MDT SubstanceAbuseCounselor will use the “whatever it takes” approach to help people experiencing homelessness get connected to substanceabuse resources, and supportive services, in order to obtain permanent housing.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
The SubstanceAbuseCounselor's key areas of responsibility include:

Implement case management service plan goals emphasizing coordinated strategies for addressing substanceabuse issues, relapse prevention, and any other risk factors that could impede client's functioning.
Provide ongoing assessment of client progress in attaining goals.
Utilize a harm reduction model when working with clients.
Link clients to appropriate bridge/interim housing programs and assist them in completing required paperwork in order to enroll them in permanent housing programs.

Provide ongoing case management services that will decrease social isolation and prevent relapse risks; provide linkage and brokerage to any mental health, substanceabuse, and meaningful community activities.

Respond to urgent requests for assistance from clients as needed.
Perform daily follow-ups and wellness checks on existing clients and on all new referrals.
Participate in all meetings with collaborative agencies and other community meetings as directed.
Conducts 1:1 consistent with harm reduction principles to facilitate patient awareness, understanding, and motivation to change related to addiction and recovery issues, as necessary.
Cultivate relationships with substanceabuse treatment providers in the service area.
Must be able to operate a motor vehicle to perform the essential functions of the position, which includes transporting clients in company vehicles.

Qualifications

Experience providing street-based services to highly vulnerable populations.

Education:

Job Description
The Substance Use Counselor (SUC) is responsible for providing adult client supervision in a shelter or recuperative care facility, and assisting in the maintenance of a safe, secure environment that enhances behavioral health and substance use counseling while utilizing the harm reduction and recovery model to all clients being served.
The pay offered for this role is $25.00 per hour.
The schedule for this role is 12:00pm to 4:00pm; contractor/ as needed
Responsibilities
Within a harm reduction model complete substance use assessment, care plan, and goal setting to clients interested in services
Works with a multidisciplinary team, lead site activities such as; current events groups, community meetings, goals groups, fitness groups, activities of daily living groups, and/or recreational activities, as appropriate to the specified client population promoting safety and comfort in a supportive, therapeutic environment
Provide individual and group counseling to clients struggling with substance use
Recognize the need for and provide crisis intervention services to clients as needed according to PRO-ACT principles
Documents all client interactions or activities complete on behalf of the client (including collaboration with other disciplines, case consultations, telephone calls, leaving voicemails, and collateral contact) in AICA & KIPU according to the documentation standards of the agency and within 96 hours of service provision
Meet documentation standards as assigned by Clinical Supervisor, Manager or Director
Informs Supervising Manager or Director, within 12 hours of making an incident report, APS/CPS and/or 5150 report within a mandated time frame
Collaborate (on a need-to-know basis) with teams including site nursing, case management, behavioral health therapists, site-staff, food service and transportation regarding client's substance use counseling needs, ensuring the highest level of client care
Maintain confidentiality of work-related information and materials according to HIPAA standards
Assists client with activities of daily living; attend to client behavioral issues and provide assistance in crisis intervention, as needed
Tracks and maintain client observation, sets boundaries on inappropriate behavior, and recognizes the need for and provide crisis intervention services to clients
Act as a liaison with clients, families of clients, or external facilities and agencies
Follow established institutional policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety environmental, and infection control standards
Research and build relationships with community agencies for client resources and linkage
Familiarization with supportive services in county/counties served, including but not limited to linking clients to outside therapy, mental health, substance use treatment, job training, schooling, church, AA/NA meetings, etc.
Participates in the development and implementation of client treatment programs as directed
Attends and participates in staff meetings, in service trainings, workshops and other required meetings as directed
Drive to any IF location for coverage, trainings, or support, as directed
Support volunteers as needed; may be required to supervise volunteer(s)
Circulate throughout the facility every hour and check-in with security guards and medical staff concerning any client related issues. Be available to assist staff immediately with the de-escalation process when asked to do so by security guards, medical staff, and site-staff
Other responsibilities, as assigned by Supervisor, Associate Manager, Manager or Director
Preferred Experience/Minimum Qualifications:
Required:
High School graduate or GED equivalent
Must possess a valid Drug & Alcohol Certification from one of the following agencies:
CAADE, CCAPP & CADTP
Addiction counseling: 1 year
Ability to work flexible hours when needed (2nd and 3rd shifts)
Basic computer skills including the ability to prepare simple correspondence and reports in Microsoft Word and summarize and report data in Excel spreadsheets.
Preferred:
Bilingual in English and Spanish
Experience and knowledge with electronic filing system (KIPU & AICA)
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams).
Two years of experience working with homeless and dual diagnosis (mental illness and comorbid substanceabuse problem) populations.

Treatment for substance use disorders and mental health issues provided by MCRP typically lasts from 6 to 12 months, ensuring comprehensive support for participants.
The Intake Coordinator I conducts the initial evaluation of potential clients to assess their requirements for Substance Use Disorder (SUD) services, completes admission paperwork, and creates the initial Treatment Plan. They ensure a smooth transition for clients to their treatment team, ensuring that new clients are stabilized, and immediate needs are met. The Intake Coordinator I collaborates closely with counselors, case managers, therapists, and other team members to organize and oversee client concerns, make necessary referrals, and offer educational support.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Assessment and Client Care
Welcome clients to the program and ensure high-quality customer service is provided.
Facilitate admissions and discharges.
