Purpose of this Role
The Substitute Teacher supports the mission of Neighborhood House's Early Childhood and Head Start programs, providing high-quality, developmentally appropriate care and education for children ages 6 weeks to 5 years.
This position serves as a flexible classroom support, filling in for classroom staff as needed at any of Neighborhood House's four licensed sites, housing 13 classrooms, across West Portland Multnomah County.
Substitutes may be called on short notice to provide coverage for staff absences, ensuring continuity of care and compliance with Head Start Program Performance Standards and Oregon Department of Early Learning and Care (DELC) Child Care Licensing Regulations. While hours are not guaranteed, substitutes must maintain availability for at least two (2) days per week , including the ability to work up to 8 hours per day when called in.
Primary Responsibilities
Responsibilities are as follows:
Support and maintain a positive, inclusive, and safe classroom environment that aligns with Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) strategies and Head Start Performance Standards.
Follow established lesson plans, routines, and transitions created by the classroom teaching team.
Engage actively with children through play, conversation, and intentional learning experiences that foster curiosity, problem-solving, and social emotional growth.

Teachers have an incredibly important role in mixing play with learning by implanting a safe and developmentally appropriate classroom environment. With art, games, and play, teachers help children grow to have better social skills and creating connections.
Job Responsibilities:
Teacher will work in the classroom supervising Aides and Volunteers while ensuring a safe and enriching classroom environment for children.
Job Specifics:
Provide and follow written plans for a well-balanced, age appropriate curriculum.
Supervise assistants and volunteers.
Maintain a physically and emotionally appropriate environment for children in compliance with state regulations and YMCA standards.
Maintain a clean and neat environment.
Supervise children at all times.
Maintain a high level of interaction with the children.
Maintain positive interactions with parents/guardians of children.
Complete all record keeping in an accurate and timely manner.
Design and implement a daily schedule which includes activities to enhance the development of cognitive, social, emotional and physical skills.
Participate in observation, assessment and evaluation of children.
Adhere to the YMCA principles of love, respect, honesty, service and responsibility.
Respond appropriately to all and any emergency situations
Essential Functions:
Incorporate and Model our YMCA Christian principles into your work
Commit to establishing long-term work relationships with staff, volunteers, participants, members and families
Ability to communicate well with children, staff and parents.
Ability to work independently as well as create and lead work teams.
Ability and willingness to obtain and keep current CPR/First Aid certifications.
Ability and willingness to perform any and all jobs in the program.
Ability and willingness to participate in 15+ hours of job related training annually.
Ability to sit on floor or child sized chair, stand for 1 hour periods, occasionally lift 50 lbs. and crouch for 15 minutes.
Ability to multi task.
Required Qualifications:
Pass a YMCA Background Check
Two year degree in Education or a related field, or 30 credit hours of classes in Child Development or two years' experience working with children required.
Knowledge of state licensing requirements.
Current Food Handlers, CPR and First Aid certification or ability to obtain within 30 days.
18 years of age
Meet all child care Lead Teacher qualifications as dictated by the state Child Care Division/Department of Early Learning
