After School Teacher

Silver Knights Chess Academy has taught chess to over 120,000 children in our 19-year history. We provide curriculum and thorough, paid training on how to help children learn chess in a small group teaching setting. Come join us!
Pay: Starting at $55 / hour long club
Please note the total time commitment is longer due to setup and cleanup.
You will be a great fit if you:
Want to work with children (ages 5-11).
Want to play chess! You don't have to be a master-level player, but you do need interest and enthusiasm.
Are available to work part-time during "after-school" hours beginning in the fall
Experience as a camp counselor, tutor, teacher, coach, after school instructor, or in preschool or daycare is a plus!
Are comfortable driving and have a flexible schedule, for example, an Uber or Lyft driver, a student, or a retired person looking for a part-time job.
You will receive thorough, paid training on how to help children learn chess.
Here's a sample schedule of how your day might look:
2:45pm - Arrive at school, check in, set up
3:00pm - Kids arrive, you teach lesson
3:20pm - Kids play practice games
4:00pm - Clean up, parent pickup
Additional Qualifications:
Must be available at least 3 weekdays during the school year between 2:30 pm - 5:00 pm
Have a reliable vehicle for transportation
Ability to lift 25 lbs of teaching equipment
Ability to learn and use new software tools
Responsibilities:
Manage a classroom of 10-20 students
Use our curriculum to demonstrate and effectively communicate all of the basic rules (piece movement, how to castle, check, checkmate, etc) and strategy
Promote good sportsmanship among students
Responsibly store and maintain all teaching equipment and materials
Supervise parent pickup

- Physical Requirements
The teacher shall be able to:

General Description: Early Years (EY) After School teachers must be enthusiastic, creative, industrious, responsible, punctual, and resourceful and have a genuine appreciation for children. EY After School Teacher duties fall into three areas: (a) Lead groups of children in carrying out activities during the course of the day as needed, (b) supervise and actively engage children during class time, on the playground or in the gym and (c) actively support other WISEL staff members as needed to insure that all safe best practices are followed.
Early Years (EY) After School teachers are expected to carry out instructions from the Director of WISEL, the Assistants to the Director and other senior staff. Their goal is to create a positive learning experience for children, which supports their Spanish language acquisition, social and emotional skill development and the positive atmosphere of the community as a whole.
Early Years After School teachers oversee supervision, plan age-appropriate lessons and activities in French; ensure the safety and well-being of all children, and contribute to the effective operation of WIS' programs according to standards of excellence.

Plan age appropriate lessons, activities and deliver engaging instruction to students.
Send weekly written recap emails to families summarizing projects students completed during the week.
Prepare daily materials by gathering supplies, and doing advanced prep-work such as portioning out, paper cutting or photocopying as needed; making examples of activity crafts to demonstrate final outcomes to children.
Communicate with daytime teachers to ensure alignment with what students are learning during the day.
Assist with the preparation and serving of snacks to children as needed.
Provide supervision and direction for children and work to maintain their safety.
Document incidents and/or accidents that occur while children are in the group and report to Auxiliary Programs management, along with any other problems or concerns.Maintain group attendance sheets and submit to WISEL Director.

Help supervise transition periods between classes and group play.
Help supervise students on monthly field trips. Ensure students safely to and from field trips.
Ensure that REEF staff clean up all areas used during REEF programs and put away program snacks on a daily basis.
Ensure that Lead Teachers have proper materials for their classes each day.
Assist with other REEF operation efforts as needed.
Assist with other school operation efforts as requested.
Contribute to a variety of projects and tasks associated with the general operation of a public charter school and its extracurricular programs, as may be requested from time to time by appropriate personnel.
Qualifications:
Experience and knowledge with before-and-aftercare program administration is strongly preferred.
Appreciation, experience, and understanding of Chinese culture. Fluency in Mandarin Chinese is strongly preferred.
Must have basic technology skills, e.g. Microsoft Office. Experience with Mac preferred.
Must be a self-starter with sound time management skills, ability to work with little supervision, problem-solving and crisis management skills.

Summary:
The Graduate Writing Tutor serves as the face of the Writing Center. They are primarily responsible for providing individual support for student writing in classes across the curriculum. A tutoring session consists of assessing a student's needs for the assignment, establishing and managing achievable goals for the session, and collaborating on a strategy for next steps after the session ends. Student Teaching Assistants will assist students in Precalculus, Calculus 1 or Calculus 2, live in-class with Dr. Monahan once a week every Tuesday in Spring 2026. Dr. Monahan will provide access to course materials and solutions ahead of time. You will be paid for your time helping in class and for weekly prep time.
Minimum Qualifications
* Must be enrolled at least part-time at Shepherd in Spring 2026
* Must have completed Precalculus, Calculus 1 or Calculus 2 with a grade of B or above.
