Sugar Bowl Resort company history timeline

1939

Sugar Bowl officially opened on December 15, 1939.

Since 1939 Sugar Bowl Resort in California as been delivering memorable experiences in skiing and snowboarding atop Donner Summit.

1940

The number of skiers was much greater than expected, and a regular winter passenger train service called the “Snowball Special” was set up from the Oakland pier in 1940.

1945

During the war, Sugar Bowl Resort closed for three years before reopening in 1945.

1946

Things got going again in 1946, and skiers were more eager to ski than ever after the war.

1950

In 1950, the second chairlift was built to the top of Mt.

1953

In 1953, the resort pioneered another ski industry milestone by building the first gondola on the West Coast.

1963

"Winter Scene" is painted in 12 oil colors and measures 10" x 8". Part of Craft Master kit series 123 Oil (1963) K1-12.

1964

In 1964, Interstate 80 was completed over Donner Summit, making access to Sugar Bowl by automobile extremely easy from the San Francisco Bay Area and helped ignite Sugar Bowl’s popularity.

1974

Longtime Sugar Bowl general manager, Rob Kautz joined the ski patrol in 1974.

1990

2004

In 2004, the Silver Belt race was reinstated as the Silver Belt Banzai and still is raced today.

2009

Sugar Bowl added the Summit chairlift in 2009 and opened the brand new Crow’s Peak chairlift last year, adding intermediate and advanced terrain, and extensive backcountry access to the resort.

2012

In 2012, Sugar Bowl Resort took over management of Royal Gorge, North America’s largest cross-country ski resort, and began updating the resort’s lodge, grooming equipment and operations.

2016

Following four years of low snowfall and widespread drought across the state, Sugar Bowl received nearly 800 inches of snow during the 2016-17 season, allowing the resort to extend its operations into early May.
