Sugarloaf Mountain history

Founded in 1951, the Sugarloaf Ski Club is the oldest club of its kind in Maine.

1955: The for-profit Sugarloaf Mountain Corp. is formed.

1964: Sugarloaf starts to draw skiers from throughout New England with a 9,000-foot-long gondola to the summit.

The following year installation began and in 1966 the summit terminal and lodge were completed.

Consequently, the Bucksaw Chair and intermediate terrain around it was developed in 1969.

1974: After a winter with little snow, Sugarloaf installs the world’s highest snowmaking system.

In 1978, to ensure good snow conditions, a major investment was made in the best snow grooming equipment available at the time, Kassbohrer Piston Bullies.

Also in 1981 The Timberwind Double chair was installed starting below the Sugarloaf Inn

In the fall of 1982, an agreement was signed between Sugarloaf Mountain Corporation, Peter Webber Enterprises, the Town of Carrabassett Valley and Robert Trent Jones, Jr. for the construction of a championship golf course.

In 1985, despite poor winter snowfall and a resulting lack of winter business, Sugarloaf experienced its greatest real estate sales year ever.

1987: The company’s reorganization plan is approved by April, and by June the company emerges from bankruptcy.

In 1988, members of the Board invested an additional $2,400,000 in the company.

Also in 1992, with the help of financing provided by the Town of Carrabassett Valley, snowmaking was expanded to cover 90% of the mountain.

The 1994-95 season began late, ended early, and was adversely impacted by a prolonged thaw in mid January.

Summer 2008, the snowmaking system saw all pumps replaced with the addition of 1 and the snowmaking compressors were all refurbished and 50 new HKD Low E snowguns and 25 new Boyne Low E fan guns were added.

In the winter of 2010 Brackett Basin opened

For the 2012 Season $1 million was spent on the snowmaking system, more gladed terrain was added to Brackett Basin and also the golf course got a new Irrigation system
