As part of the Continuous Improvement (CI) team, interns will gain valuable hands-on experience supporting and leading projects that drive operational excellence, improve efficiency, and reduce waste in a food manufacturing environment. Essential Functions of the Job:
CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT INTERNSHIP
Support CI initiatives focused on improving safety, quality, delivery, and cost.
Analyze operational data to identify trends, variances, and opportunities for improvement.
Assist in the development and implementation of Standard Work, 5S, and Visual Management systems.
Participate in and facilitate Kaizen events and root cause analysis activities (e.g., Fishbone, 5 Whys).
Document and develop new or revised Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Production, Quality Assurance, Engineering, and Supply Chain.
Conduct research on the use of AI and other digital tools to enhance manufacturing processes.
Present project findings and recommendations to key stakeholders.
Monitor and report on project progress using key performance indicators (KPIs).
Minimum Qualifications:
Candidates must be working toward a bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Operations Management, Food Science, Data Analytics, or a related field.
Candidates must be at least a sophomore in college and actively pursuing a degree.
Graduate students will be considered.
Preferred Qualifications:
Previous internship or co-op experience in a manufacturing or operations environment.
Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or similar continuous improvement methodologies.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and data visualization tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau) is a plus.
Exposure to programming languages or tools related to AI or data analysis (e.g., Python, R) is a bonus.
Additional Considerations:
Travel: Occasional travel may be required to SunOpta manufacturing sites for project support or implementation.

Essential Functions of the Job:

Team Development:
Hire, train, and lead plant engineering teams to encourage talent growth and promote effective collaboration and innovation within the organization.
Collaborates with senior leadership and human resources to support organizational structure, ensuring roles are accurately organized, defined, documented, and communicated to employees.
Outside Contractor Leadership:
May oversee contracted projects to ensure they meet specifications.
May obtain bids from contractors, purchase supplies and equipment, and manage utility operations.
May prepare construction specs or plans, consult engineers, review contract bids, and submit recommendations to supervisors.
Ensure effective safety procedures and record keeping are managed through site leadership.
Adheres/ensures team's adherence to company GMP's (good manufacturing practices), safety procedures and all other quality processes.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
Direct reports include regional capital project engineer and regional controls and automation engineer.
Leads and mentors indirect reports across the network, providing feedback on performance and potential for various roles.
In-direct reports- Plant, project, controls, processing, and packaging engineers work at aseptic and fruit snack plants and may oversee contracted projects or manage external contractors.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's of Engineering degree - Mechanical, Chemical, or Industrial or related Technology discipline.
10+ years of experience in engineering, with at least 5 years in leadership.
Demonstrated expertise in leading / managing capital projects & leading continuous improvement initiatives in a manufacturing environment.
Experience leading a team of engineers in the food/beverage production or consumer product sectors.
Proficiency in Lean, Six Sigma or other process improvement methodologies.
Proficiency using & mentoring on DFM, FMEA, SPC tools.
Preferred Qualifications:
Aseptic, beverage or thermal processing experience.
Master's Degree in Engineering - Mechanical, Chemical, Industrial or related Technology discipline.
Experienced with multi-plant, national network.

* Negotiate rates, and carrier selection for all inbound and outbound trucking vendors as needed. This includes liquid whey, permeate, DLP, and fat transportation vendors.

The Process Engineer- CoMan will identify, design, and implement improvements to equipment and processes to optimize current manufacturing and commercialization of new products. The position will manage optimization and capital projects as identified in support of the Engineering and Plant Management team. This Position will be a part of the Co-man operations team and will manage and work closely with outside vendors, plant management, as well as other various internal resources to ensure projects are specified and completed within scope.
Essential Functions:
* Conceive and plan projects, in collaboration with manufacturing team, involving major production activities (plant tests and commercialization of new products), exploration of product and/or process problems, definition and selection of new concepts and approaches in manufacturing operations.
* Partner with plant managers to design and implement capital projects.
* Partner with contractors to define scope, budget, and timelines.
* Control and administrate budgets and timelines. Drive internal and external partners to ensure on-time on-budget project completion.
* Prepare project approval and justification documents.
* Manage projects involving design and procurement of new equipment, specifying, evaluating, and recommending innovative technologies, strategies and methods that will benefit operations as needed. Ownership of management of change with Safety, Quality, Sanitation, Warehouse and Operations teams.
* Identify, research, and adapt machine and equipment design to accommodate factory and production improvements including preparation of cost justification and capital request documents.
* Lead and drive projects with significant productivity and cost reduction impacts. Areas of focus are overall yield, waste reduction, chemical usage, and CIP optimization.
* Study and improve manufacturing processes, procedures, and sequence of operations aimed at lowering manufacturing costs.
* Aid in creating, implementing, and maintaining Standard Work updates for new project implementation in conjunction with département leaders such as centerline update for operations or Redzone quality checks.
* Member of site Safety & Quality committees and responsible for researching automation solutions and providing options to prevent recurring safety & quality.
* Attend Tradeshows as directed to research and recommend new technology.
* Work with employees to identify and scope new process improvement opportunities in the areas of quality, cost, performance and preventative/predictive maintenance.
* Innovate, recommend, and collaborate with technical teams to develop new processes/services in a timely and cost-effective manner.
* Troubleshoot packaging-related issues in conjunction with Ops, Supply Chain and Quality and support continuous improvement initiatives.
* Provide technical training for operators to support making decisions at the lowest level.
* Communication skills as well as analytical and problem-solving skills also need to be very good for a change agent to be effective.
* Operate in a safe manner and ensure compliance with all safety and environmental standards.
Position Requirements:
* Bachelor's degree in process, packaging, or mechanical engineering
* 5+ years of experience
* Familiarity with food safety standards such as HACCP, GMP, and FDA regulations.
* Partner Project engineering experience
* Good Windows skills (Excel, Word, etc.)
* Good oral and written communication skills. team spirit, dynamic, innovative, results-oriented and autonomous
* Significant interaction with manufacturing facilities is required
* AutoCAD Design Experience preferred
* P&ID knowledge or experience preferred
* Redzone Experience preferred
