This position works closely with the Opioid Prevention Coordinator and Community Paramedics as an active member of the Opioid Prevention team; connects with overdose survivors within 24-72 hours of the overdose incident, then for a 30, 60, and 90 day follow up (along with members of the Opioid Prevention team); provides harm reduction education, outreach and Naloxone administration training to individuals; promotes wellness management strategies, which includes delivering therapeutic interventions (e.g., Wellness Recovery Action Planning or Illness Management and Recovery) and employment services; coordinates and facilitates harm reduction peer support group meetings on a bimonthly basis; encourage individuals to attend training sessions and support group meetings; maintains a monthly record of individuals connected to support and services; prepares and submits documentation accurately and on time; attends the Substance Abuse and Treatment Committee Monthly Meetings and other identified meetings and trainings; potentially works within the prison and/or local hospital to provide peer support care; assists clients by finding resources, advising the consumer of processes, and encouraging follow through with proposed resolutions, locating social activities, or provide other assistance as needed; and models effective coping and self-help techniques to individuals or groups of consumers. Requires general knowledge of Public Health principles, practices, and procedures; general knowledge and skills in the use of education/training principles; skill in problem solving and decision-making and the ability to work independently; skill in the use of computers and applicable software; ability to comprehend and apply the Federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996, and the current Privacy and Security Amendments of this Act; ability to assess, plan, develop, implement, and evaluate using a variety of methodologies; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, clients, and the general public; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Such services include, but are not limited to, Peer Support, Supported Employment and Outpatient Therapy.
POSITION SUMMARY:
Peer Support (PS) Services are structured and scheduled activities for adults aged eighteen (18) and older with a diagnosis of Mental Health and Substance use disorders. Peer support services are provided by PS staff. PS service is an individualized, recovery-focused service that allows individuals the opportunity to learn to manage their own recovery and advocacy process. Interventions of PS staff serve to enhance the development of natural support, as well as coping and self-management skills. Interventions of PS staff may also provide supportive services to assist an individual in community re-entry following hospitalization.
PS services emphasize personal safety, self-worth, confidence, growth, connection to the community, boundary setting, planning, self-advocacy, personal fulfillment and development of social supports, and effective communication skills. Services focus on acquisition development: expansion of rehabilitative skills needed to move forward in recovery.
PS Specialist primary responsibilities are to direct, coordinate, and manage the activities of a comprehensive mental health program and to ensure the program and to ensure the program operates in full compliance with relevant laws, ensure accuracy of data; compliance with regulation; and identify operational efficiencies.
EXAMPLES OF SPECIFIC INTERVENTIONS INCLUDE:
Self Help: cultivating the individual's ability to make informed, independent choices. Helping the individual develop a network of contacts for information and support based on experience of the PS staff.
System Advocacy: assisting the individual to talk about what it means to have a mental illness to an audience or group. Assisting the individual with writing a letter or making a telephone call about an issue related to mental illness or recovery.
Individual Advocacy: discussing concerns about medication with the Physician or Nurse at the individual's request. Helping the individual make appointments for psychiatric and general medical treatment when requested. Guiding the individual toward a proactive role in health care.
Pre-Crisis and Post Crisis Support: assisting the individual with the development of a personal crisis plan. This includes help in developing the Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP). Giving feedback to the individual on early signs of relapse and how to request help to prevent a crisis. Assisting the individual in learning how to use the crisis plan.
WORK SCHEDULE/ENVIRONMENT:
Work schedule will vary per assigned client needs. The PS Specialist will work in a variety of environments, settings, and should be able to work a flexible schedule.
TRAINING, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES:
PS must be delivered by individuals who have had the life experience of being diagnosed with a serious mental illness or substance use disorder and must be North Carolina Certified Peer Support Specialist who:
Self-identify as an individual with life experience of being diagnosed with a serious mental illness or substance use disorder which meets Federal definitions
Are well established in their own recovery
Are currently in recovery and are stable
Have a high school diploma or GED equivalency
Are supervised by a Qualified Professional (QP)
Are not a family member of the individual who receives PS services
PS services may be provided by paraprofessionals.
Follow the NC PS certification guidelines under Behavioral Health Resource Plan, School of Social Work, UNC Chapel Hill (BHRP).
MINIMUM REQUIRED TRAINING:
All employees are required to complete agency orientation within the first thirty (30) days of employment. Employees are also required to complete Evidence Based training prior to being alone with any clients. Employees providing PS services to adults will complete training specific to the required components of the PS service definition including crisis response within the first 90 days of employment.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED BY SUPPORT SPECIALISTS:
The PS Specialist will have access to their supervisor on an ongoing basis through face-to-face contact, via email and through written correspondence or telephone. If an Associate Professional or Paraprofessional, a supervision plan will be completed to include supervision requirements.
LICENSE OR CERTIFICATION REQUIRED BY STATUE OR REGULATION:
A valid NC drivers' license and car insurance is required for this position. Must be a North Carolina Certified Peer Support Specialist.
