Performs these functions under the direction and supervision of the surgeon and in accordance with hospital policy and appropriate laws and regulations. In collaboration with surgical technologist performs separate roles which is defined by job description and advanced education which requires knowledge in the use of surgical instruments on tissues versus the handling of instruments.

Education
Required - High school diploma or equivalent.
Preferred- Certified course in Endoscopic Saphenous Vein Harvesting.

Work Experience
Required - 5 years of experience working in surgery.
Preferred - 2 years of experience in Surgical First Assisting.

Certifications
Required - Certification from an accredited Surgical First Assistant Program.
Basic Life Support (BLS) from American Heart Association.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs)
Skilled in suturing and saphenous vein harvesting. Strong knowledge of sterile technique. Conflict resolution skills and ability to demonstrate good judgement. Basic analytical skills. Proficiency in using computers, software, and web-based applications. Effective verbal and written communication skills and ability to present information clearly and professionally to varying levels of individuals throughout the patient care process. Ability to travel throughout and between facilities.

Job Duties
Practices strict adherence to sterile technique. Facilitates preparation of the patient for surgery. Provides visualization of the operative field. Under the direct supervision of the surgeon, harvests the saphenous vein for coronary artery grafting purposes. Utilizes appropriate techniques to assist with closure of body planes. Selects and applies appropriate wound dressing and secures drainage system or intra aortic balloon pump to tissue. Adapts behavior to the specific patient population, including but not limited to respect for privacy, method of introduction to the patient, adapting explanation of services or procedures to be performed, requesting permissions and communication style. Performs other related duties as required.

Because the incumbent works within a healthcare setting, there may be occupational risk for exposure to hazardous medications or hazardous waste within the environment through receipt, transport, storage, preparation, dispensing, administration, cleaning and/or disposal of contaminated waste. The risk level of exposure may increase depending on the essential job duties of the role.

You are the go-to person ensuring that every detail is arranged for surgical services. Your ability to work in a fast-paced environment as you carry on the Legacy mission of making life better for others will allow you to thrive in our supportive healthcare community.

Functions as a first assistant during surgical incision, excision, and repair of pathology and throughout the perioperative period on procedures for which privileges have been granted. Will perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Legacy Silverton Medical Center serves the heart of the Willamette Valley with a wide mix of services, many not typically available in a community hospital: CT scan (computerized tomography), nuclear medicine, echocardiography, family birth center and much more.

Responsibilities

Demonstrates correct tissue handling, using the correct methods of handling tissue and appropriate use of instrumentation.

Demonstrates proper wound exposure, considering types of retraction, appropriate use of instrumentation, and effects on surrounding tissue.

Demonstrates proper use and handling of surgical instruments and medical devices, including manipulation of instrumentation.

Demonstrates proper hemostasis technique, showing understanding of anatomy and physiology of blood vessels and the coagulation process, and proper use of artificial methods and cautery.

Demonstrates proper suturing techniques, including use of instrumentation, types of stitches, knot-tying, and cutting suture.

Qualifications

Experience:

1 year Surgical Technologist experience preferred.

Education:

High school diploma or equivalent.

Graduation from an accredited Surgical Technologist program or completion of a military training program for surgical technologists, or equivalent experience.

As of January 1, 2017, in lieu of the formal Surgical Technologist training program requirement, may substitute professional experience if candidate has worked 2 out of last 3 years as Surgical Technologist.

Must have completed an accredited First Assistant program.

Essential Functions

Positions patient to give best exposure for surgical procedure, using stabilizing equipment when necessary, while maximizing patient comfort and safety.

Provides visualization of the operative site using appropriate method, including manipulation of tissue and materials, retraction, sponging, suctioning, and irrigation.

Utilizes appropriate technique to achieve temporary and permanent hemostasis.

Assists with body plane closure, application of wound dressings, and securing of drainage systems.
