The Surgical Technologist participates as part of the surgical team in assisting nursing staff in support services necessary for safe and efficient care of patients within various areas of surgical services. Assists at the surgical field passing instruments and supplies to other members of the surgical team and maintains the sterile field. Participates in acquiring, preparing, and equipping the surgical suites. Ensures the delivery of quality care for patients undergoing surgical procedures in accordance with individual needs, standards of care, and hospital policy. Assists in non-surgical patient intervention under the direct supervision of a physician or RN. May serve as a Core Technician, with responsibility for maintaining sterile technique and providing supplies and instruments as requested. Added job functions may include being responsible for staff education, inventory, vendor management, effective physician relationships, birth certificate processing or other administrative duties.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Performed majority of the time:
· Performs scrub duties for all specialties that may require surgical intervention.
· Protects equipment from damage/misuse; reports damage/misuse and or malfunction to appropriate personnel.
· Develops and maintains two-way communications with physicians, staff and management.
· Precepts and trains new scrub technologist and student technologist.
Performed occasionally but critical to successful performance of the job:
· Informs appropriate person to make changes on preference cards when requested by physician.
· Participates in new supply/equipment evaluation and implementation.
· Attends and participates in staff meetings, in-services and continuing education opportunities.
· Participates in vendor monitoring and management in accordance with department/hospital procedures/protocols.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS
Education:
· Graduated from a Nationally Accredited organization educational program accredited by CAAHEP or ABHES and obtain a national Surgical certification by the NBSTSA, JCAHPO, or NCCT within one year of graduation; or
· Completion of a training program for surgical technologists in a branch of the armed forces of the United States or in the United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corp and completion of 16 hours of continuing education as described in section (15) of this rule every two years to be tracked by department; or
· Practice of surgical technology at least two years between January 1, 2014 and January 1, 2017 in a hospital, ambulatory surgical center or as an employee of a federal government agency or institution and completion of 16 hours of continuing education every two years to be tracked by department

These 16 units must be completed by December 31 of every odd numbered year.

Responsible for interfacing with laser manufacturer field engineering service team to maintain laser; operation, inventory, and management of medical supplies as needed for treatment planning.
Accurately collect all pertinent laser data and record in EHR.
Assist patients between preoperative, laser suite through discharge.
Attend in-service programs as required.
Ensure compliance with required laser safety programs and maintenance as needed on the laser.
