Education Requirements:
Graduate of a recognized Surgical Technologist program, or in the last semester of an approved program is required.
National certification and CPR certification are required within 6 months of graduation from recognized program, or within 6 months start date of employment. If the employee allows certification to lapse they must re-certify within 3 months from the expiration date or employment can be suspended or terminated.

Monitors the effectiveness and accuracy of surgical equipment and devices for optimum performance.
The ability to maintain sustained hand and/or arm position while moving the opposite hand and/or arm.

The ability to make precisely coordinated movements of the fingers of one or both hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble very small objects.

Utilizes supplies and equipment in cost-effective manner.
Maintains adequate supplies/par levels for assigned specialty items (i.e. mesh, staplers, special suture, and ortho systems).
Updates resource maps on an ongoing basis.
Collaborates with RN for correct sponge, needle, and instrument count.
Achieves goals identified at previous annual or 90 day evaluation.
Maintains proficiency in specialties and flexibility in all other areas.
Attends meetings and in-services to further self-growth.
Completes required Computer Based Learnings (CBL'S) on NetLearning
Seeks information from literature and resource persons for all specialties.
Maintains requirements for certification.
Assists in instructing staff, students, and new employees.
Adheres to departmental/DMH policies.

Position Summary
Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse and Physician, performs the technical functions directly related to surgical asepsis, instrument preparation and presentation during surgical cases. Uses judgment to independently perform various activities related to the effective preparation of instruments prior to, during and following completion of O.R. cases. Duties & Responsibilities
Follows established Operating Room policies and procedures Assists in the care, maintenance, distribution and control of equipment and supplies, both sterile and unsterile, which are used in operating procedures Assist with operations in the capacity of a Scrub Attendant. This includes arranging sterile articles, handling/passing serving instruments, dressing materials and suture appropriate to the scheduled operation while maintaining sterility and orderliness of instrument tables Completes sponge, needle and instrument counts with RN prior to, during and after surgery according to hospital policy. * Assists in preparing and providing environmental and social enrichment to the laboratory animals following the enrichment program.

* Performs necessary colony health management as required by the animal health program
Drugs, Supplies and Testing
* Dispenses and fills non-controlled drugs and supplies from the CCM pharmacy to laboratory personnel. Performs periodic inventories of drugs, supplies, assay kits and instruments with an emphasis on the surgical suite. Prepares and submits animals or specimens (blood, tissue, feces) for testing at diagnostic laboratories as determined necessary by the clinical veterinarians.
Teaching/Training
* Trains laboratory personnel, interns and AHTs in basic surgical techniques and asepsis. Trains laboratory personnel, interns and AHTs in technical procedures such as intravenous injections, blood collection, intubation, catheterization, etc.
Regulatory
* Remains current with all regulations pertaining to laboratory animals including the Guide, Animal Welfare Act, etc. Maintains technical familiarity with a wide range of clinical and experimental procedures for a variety of laboratory animal species. Participates in various staff meetings, staff training and continuing professional education. Becomes familiar with relevant Animal Study Protocols and meets with investigators and laboratory personnel to discuss research needs and animal health concerns.
Administrative
* Orders surgical supplies, completes anesthesia records, surgical reports and surgical recharge forms, tracks inventory, restocks the clinical areas, and performs other administrative tasks as required.

The SurgicalTechnician (Scrub Tech) plays a crucial role in supporting surgical procedures by preparing the operating room, ensuring the proper functioning of equipment, and assisting the surgical team throughout the procedure.
