    The Surgical Support Technician 1 is responsible for maximizing the efficiency of the operating rooms (OR) before, during and after surgical procedures by assisting with room set up and turnover, supplies and equipment set up, inventory maintenance and non clinical support. **ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE ROLE** Cleans surfaces and equipment in the Operating Room (OR). Performs proper OR decontamination after each surgical procedure and as deemed necessary by surgical team. Collects and discards hospital waste using standard precautions and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines. Performs various transporting duties including, but not limited to, patient, lab and supply transport. Inventories, monitors par levels, orders and restocks supplies in areas where supplies are maintained to ensure proper inventory. Ensures supplies and instruments are available for surgical procedures by auditing case carts using the doctor preference card (DPC). Replenish supplies and instruments as needed. Assists the clinician with tasks that are needed inside and outside the OR. Opens sterile supplies for procedures, under direct supervision of appropriate clinician. Prepares for surgical procedures by ensuring instrument sets are complete and available. Performs case cart process by picking supplies and instruments for upcoming cases. Performs flash sterilization tests to ensure proper functionality. Assists with medical emergencies following established procedures and guidelines. Completes all on call duties in timely and efficient manner, and acts as first line resource person to surgical team while on call. Employees hired and/or functioning in the capacity as surgical support technologists (Ancillary Support Tech II and/or III) before September 1, 2009, may assist Physicians and Surgical Team by holding retractors during surgical procedures. Provides satisfactory customer service and projects professionalism in all contacts. * Successfully and accurately completes patient care reports, billing information and all other associated documentation in a timely manner. * Works under physically and psychologically taxing conditions to include inclement weather, temperature extremes, hazardous environments, loud noises and high-stress situations. High potential for exposure to blood-borne pathogens, dangerous chemicals, sharp objects and fall/trip hazards. * Performs other duties as assigned to include general housekeeping chores and special projects. * Must successfully pass departmental skills evaluation and fully complete NEOP process before staffing a truck. * Adhere to company policies and procedures. * Other duties as assigned. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: * Lift, carry, balance and push up to 125 pounds (250 pounds with assistance). * Demonstrate flexibility and physical coordination by bending from the waist and touching toes, squat with legs parallel to the ground and kneeling with both knees firmly on the ground. * Climb 20 sets of stairs without rest within 60 seconds. * Demonstrate fine manual dexterity by performing job related clinical skills (starting IV's, intubating, etc.). * Have correctable vision adequate to read street signs, see in low light and read small print. PSYCHOLOGICAL REQUIREMENTS: * Use good judgment and remain calm in high-stress situations. * Maintain a positive attitude in the face of adversity. * Have good interpersonal and conflict resolution skills. * Function under situations of extreme fatigue due to little or no rest, extreme temperatures and inclement weather conditions. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: * High school graduate or GED. * Certified as an EMT in the State of Texas * CPR certification * 911 Areas - Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) or International Trauma Life Support (ITLS). * Communicate effectively * Read, write, and interpret instructions in the English language * Previous experience preferred in emergency care * Must possess a valid Texas driver's license and an insurable driver record.
