Job Summary and Qualifications The OR Scrub Tech/Surgical Technologist assists with the nursing care of patients under the supervision of an OR Registered Nurse and functions as a sterile scrub person caring for patients undergoing surgery within the OR suite. You will set up the sterile surgical field using aseptic technique, utilizing knowledge of: Human Anatomy and Physiology and the physician's preferences for surgical instrumentation, suturing, passing, dissecting, retracting, and closing of surgical wounds. Assist the circulating Registered Nurse with operating room set up, equipment, and positioning of the surgical patient as well as break down of instrument table.     Surgical assistants provide aid in exposure, hemostasis, closure, and other intraoperative technical functions that help the surgeon carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient. In addition to intraoperative duties, the surgical assistant also performs preoperative and postoperative duties to better facilitate proper patient care. The surgical assistant performs these functions during the operation under the direction and supervision of the surgeon and in accordance with hospital policy and appropriate laws and regulations. The staffing of the Center is based on a teamwork concept. Employees may be cross trained in other clinical areas and may be expected to perform duties other than their normal ones as staffing and patient needs change. Duties and Responsibilities Promotes the mission, vision, and values of the organization. Assures patient/personal safety by maintaining a safe and therapeutic environment Performs necessary tasks for a scrub role using technical skills. Ensures proper instrumentation for each procedure. Follows all principles of sterile technique. Adhering to principles of Universal Precautions. Maintain a proper sterile field during surgical procedures. Maintains confidentiality of patient and Center related business. Positioning the patient. The surgical assistant shall be familiar with common positions related to the surgical procedure and will be able to use the equipment necessary to provide the position. Suctioning, irrigating, or sponging. Manipulation of suture materials (e.g., loops, tags, running sutures) Proper use of body mechanics to prevent obstruction of the surgeon's view. Utilizing appropriate techniques to assist with hemostasis. Participating in volume replacement or autotransfusion techniques as appropriate. Utilizing appropriate techniques to assist with closure of body planes. Selecting and applying appropriate wound dressings. Aiding in securing drainage systems to tissue. Participates in all counts (instrument, sponge sharps, etc.) as necessary. Assists with maintenance of supplies and equipment. Maintains established Center and departmental policies and procedures. Documents concisely, precisely, and accurately on all records or documents as indicated by policy. Participates in quality assessment activities as directed for the continuous improvement of patient care and for the Center. Compliance with continuing and mandatory education programs Ability to respond quickly, physically, and mentally when priorities and/or the patient's condition changes.
