Job Summary
Provides technical assistance to physician/registered nurse in surgical procedures related to the operation of the Surgical and Minor Surgical Suite. Works collaboratively with Registered Nurse to prepare patients for surgical procedures to include all specialties, as appropriate, such as Thoracic, Neurosurgery, OB-GYN, ENT, Plastics, Orthopedics, General, GU, Colorectal, Robotics, etc. The Surgical Technologist scrubs for the surgical procedures and performs a variety of other duties related to the preparation and maintenance of the operating room environment. Maintains inventory of necessary equipment and supplies, orders supplies and restocks work area as assigned, assuring the availability of needed supplies.
Demonstrates sound knowledge of surgical techniques, both routine and specialized, and performs in a professional manner. Applies this knowledge appropriately to develop and improve skills in assisting the surgeon and in the organization of work utilizing economy in time, motion and materials.
Demonstrates competency with aseptic technique during surgery.
Demonstrates ability to use all equipment and supplies necessary for surgical procedures.
Develops and demonstrates initiative in order to inquire and explore new surgical procedures and subject relating to the operating room and to the surgical patient.
Differentiates sterilization methods for special equipment and instruments necessary for specific surgical procedures.
Demonstrates ability to retract, suction, irrigate, apply pressure and assist in homeostasis by use of assorted sponges in the surgical field under the direction of the surgeon.
Performs co-circulating role with appropriate credentialings
Demonstrates self-direction above and beyond daily assignments and actively offers assistance to colleagues both within the main OR's, cardiac OR's and cardiac cath lab.
Demonstrates collegially behavior of respect and consideration with regard to work environment, i.e. restocking rooms, returning equipment/supplies for other surgical procedures, cleaning work areas/station and or communicate as appropriate in OR.

Provide technical oversight and training to ensure that all invasive procedures (venipuncture, capillary puncture, clotting time, etc.) performed in the laboratory are done in the safest, most sterile, and expeditious manner, with minimal discomfort for the patient. Training may include newly arrived corpsman, nurses, reservists, and American Red Cross volunteers.
Perform phlebotomy-related administrative and clerical procedures of the front desk section of the lab, fully document all samples obtained per the laboratory's standard operating procedures and maintain the supply inventory and cleanliness of the front desk and phlebotomy area.
Provide instruction on patient centered specimen collection (twenty four (24) hour urine, occult blood testing, semen analysis, ) and special requirements necessary for laboratory-collected specimens (fasting requirements, special diets, etc.).
As directed, perform basic "waived testing" as defined by Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA), to include screening tests and other tests cleared by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for home use, such as pregnancy
Provide services in compliance with applicable military installation and service written policies, procedures and regulations, as well as those of American Association of Blood Banks (AABB), College of American Pathologists (CAP), Clinical Laboratory Improvement Program (CLIP), and Joint Commission for Accreditation of Health care Organization (JCAHO).
Perform registration duties associated with blood drives on all prospective donors, including but not limited to, preparation of donor card demographic information, donor interviews and donor eligibility determination, obtain donor history, and input donor demographic data into the DBSS computer system.
Assess donor temperature and blood pressure and annotate on DD572 Donor Determine whether donors meet acceptable criteria for hemoglobin or hematocrit by the use of Copper Sulfate (CuSO4), spun hematocrit, or other valid method.
Perform phlebotomy using standard blood bags in accordance with established standard operating procedures, American Association of Blood Bank guidelines, and Food and Drug Administration

Job Overview:

In the operating room, you will have frequent exposure to blood or body fluid, medicinal preparations, and other conditions common to a surgical operating room environment. Surgery days typically begin at 7:00 am. Must be flexible to work in both our Newport News and Williamsburg locations.
Responsibilities:
Know the name, use and location of medications, supplies and equipment used in the operating room, recovery room, the instrument processing areas and storage.
Familiar with the use of sterilizer, ultrasonic instrument cleaner, operating room table, lifts and lights, cautery unit, microscope, laser, suction, crash cart, EKG monitor, defibrillator, washer/dryer etc.
Familiar with organizational policies and procedures.
Ensure regular operating room and recovery room equipment maintenance and servicing, according to established policies.
Understand the duties of the surgeon, the anesthesiologist, the circulating nurse and the support staff, within the organization.
Understand all duties and functions of the pre/post-operative nurse, recovery room nurse, circulating nurse, and scrub nurse technician, sterilization.
Ensure compliance with regulations and the facility's standards of quality patient care.
Assist in the operating room set-up with the necessary supplies and equipment for each surgical procedure.
Assist in the operating room clean-up and decontamination after each surgery.
Handle and dispose of Biomedical Waste according to policies and procedures.
Process and send specimens to the lab.
Maintain sterile field and technique during surgical procedure.
Ensure instruments/terminal are properly cleaned
Assist physician during surgery. Ensure a smooth flow in the operating room.
Assist with patient care in the clinical setting to include but not limited to, assisting with local procedures, answering patient questions, and rooming patients in the clinic setting.
Complete charting required for post-op, follow-ups, specimen collection, and consults as needed in the clinical setting.
Follow strict traffic control and maintain sterile environment in the operating room and recovery room.
During downtime, assist with facility laundry needs
Maintain strict aseptic technique at all times.
Adhere to operating room/office dress code policy.
Transport, process and sterilize instruments and surgical trays according to established policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

* Passes instruments and other sterile supplies to surgical assistants.
* May hold retractors, cut suture, help count sponges, needles or blades if applicable.
* Prepares, cares for and dispose specimens taken for laboratory analysis.
* Ability to operate sterilizer, lights, suction, and other operating room equipment/ diagnostic equipment.
* Assists in patient transfer to PACU, if needed. Helps clean and restock operating room.
* Assists with any technical function under supervision of system to carry out a safe operation.
* Ability to prep, drape and position the patient for surgery.
* Prepares for case according to surgeon's preference card.
* Gathers supplies needed and anticipates needs for case.
* Needs manual dexterity to handle instruments.
* Must be emotionally conscientious, orderly, and emotionally stable to handle the OR environment.
QUALIFICATIONS
