Surgical Technologist - Operating Room - Days

Preferred Criteria

Certified Surgical Technologist by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting Certification (NBSTSA) or if a new graduate, must supply exam date prior to start of employment. Certification must be obtained within six months of hire and complete a probationary period of six (6) months from date of hire

Duties & Responsibilities
Purpose of Position:
Under direct supervision by a Registered Professional Nurse, surgeon, or other healthcare professional, serves as part of a medical team providing surgical care to patients; facilitates the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures. All personnel perform related work.
Examples of Typical Tasks:
1. Prepares the operating room and sterile field for surgical procedures, including setting up surgical supplies, instruments and equipment using sterile technique and ensuring that surgical equipment is functioning properly and safely.
2. Assists healthcare professionals in receiving, labelling and verifying sterile solutions and medications to be administered during surgery according to established protocol; may assist anesthesia personnel.
3. Verifies patient's identity, correct surgical site, and correct surgical procedure.
4. Assists in moving and positioning patient for surgery; adheres to established safety guidelines.
5. Engages in appropriate gowning and gloving procedures in perioperative setting.
6. Assists healthcare professionals to perform non-invasive preparation of the skin's surface; drapes patients for surgery.
7. Assists surgeon throughout the operative procedure, including anticipating instrument needs. Responsible for handing instruments and other sterile supplies to surgeon; maintains accurate count of sponges, needles and instruments in perioperative setting.
8. Assists in the surgeon's provision of hemostasis during surgery.
9. Holds retractor after placement by a healthcare professional during procedure.
10. Maintains and monitors surgical asepsis during all surgical procedures according to established guidelines.
11. Prepares and applies bandages and sterile and non-sterile dressings to incision site; may prepare suture material as directed by surgeon.
12. May assist with transfer of patient to recovery room following surgery; provides nursing care as necessary and appropriate.
13. Properly cares for, and handles specimens taken for laboratory analysis.
14. May assist with the cleaning of the operating room and replenishment of supplies once procedure is complete.
15. May operate sterilizers, lights, suction machines and electrosurgical units; may assist with diagnostic equipment.
16. Participates in staff development activities as appropriate and required.
17. Performs other related duties as assigned or directed by surgeon and/or other appropriate personnel.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Holds and maintains a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credential administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA); or
2. Successful completion of a nationally accredited educational program for surgical technologists or successful completion of an appropriate training program for surgical technology in the United States Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard or Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, and holds and maintains a certified surgical technologist credential administered by a nationally accredited surgical technologist credentialing organization other than the NBSTSA, such as the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT).
Special Note: Any employee who functions as a Surgical Technologist will be required to annually complete fifteen (15) hours of continuing education in order to remain qualified to perform the functions of a Surgical Technologist at an NYC Health + Hospitals facility.

Midtown Endoscopy & Surgical Center is a multi-specialty, state-of-the-art ambulatory surgical center in Midtown Manhattan. The surgical technologist plays a key role before, during and after surgical procedures as well as assisting during endoscopy procedures. The successful candidate will have the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure the highest standard of support to the surgeon during the operative procedure, a commitment to cleanliness and order for post-surgical cleaning and reset of the surgical suite and the knowledge to oversee the day-to-day operations of the operating suite.
Basic Surgical Technologist Duties Will Include (but not be limited to):
Ordering, inventory, and keeping the OR clean and orderly at all times as well as set up
Pre-check the operating room to be clear of clutter
Ensure that all appropriate equipment is set and operational
Gather, check and open supplies and equipment needed for the surgical procedure
Set up the sterile back table and Mayo stand with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications/solutions needed for the procedure
Assists the team members with gowning and gloving; assists with draping the patient and establishing the sterile field
Anticipates the needs of the surgeon by passing instruments and supplies to surgeon during procedure
Holds retractors or instruments as directed by the surgeon and sponges or suctions the operative site
Maintains highest standard of sterile technique during the procedure
Clean and prepare sterilized instruments after each case to ensure all instrumentation is prepared and ready for the next case
Functions as part of the OR team to ensure that all tasks associated with set up, patient care, and cleanup of the OR are accomplished
Assisting with endoscopy procedures
Job requirements
Requirement:
Certification as a SurgicalTechnician (CST) through the National Board of Medical Technologists (NBMT)
ACLS/BLS certified
