DUTIES / ACTIVITIES:
CUSTOMER SERVICE:
* Responsible for driving the FMS culture through values and customer service standards.
* Accountable for outstanding customer service to all external and internal customers.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
PATIENT CARE:
* Assist other health care members in providing patient specific detailed education regarding adequacy measures where appropriate - Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC) Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP) Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM) and regarding disease process/access.
* Welcome assigned patients and inquire as to their well-being since their last treatment. Report any complaints or observations to the nurse supervisor.
* Evaluate vascular access for patency and report any unusual findings to nurse supervisor.
* Obtain necessary pre and post treatment vital signs and weight. Report unusual findings to nurse supervisor.
* Perform vascular access evaluation pre-treatment and report unusual findings to nurse supervisor.
* Perform vascular access cannulation and report any difficulties in cannulation or unusual findings to nurse supervisor.
* Perform administration of Heparin as delegated or as allowed by state law.
* Initiate dialysis treatment according to prescribed orders including blood flow (QB) and dialysate flow (QD).
* Evaluate intradialytic problems and provide intervention as prescribed by physician order or as directed.
* Monitor patients' response to dialysis therapy and report any unusual findings to nurse supervisor.
* Obtain vital signs prior to reinfusion; perform all relevant functions necessary for the discontinuation of treatment - document.
* Discontinue dialysis treatment according to established procedures
* Evaluate patient prior to termination of venous access - standing & sitting blood pressure.
* Obtain Hemostasis and apply appropriate dressings.
* Evaluate the patient for prior to discharge and report any unusual findings to nurse supervisor.
* Perform and record Pre and Post dialysis evaluation weight and vital signs with initial identification.
* Responsible for calculating and entry of individual patients' dialysis machine programming for Ultrafiltration (UF) goal; treatment time; Sodium (Na) modeling; and UF modeling as prescribed.
* Responsible for ensuring appropriate safety alarms are enabled including Narrow Venous Limits (NVL) 160.
* Record accurate and timely information regarding vital signs and treatment parameters onto the Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet with initial identification.
* Responsible for accurate documentation of information related to patient treatment including completion of Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and if applicable progress notes.
* Report any significant information and/or change in patient condition directly to the nurse supervisor.
* Observe patient and conduct machine safety checks according to facility policy. Report any change or unusual findings to the nurse supervisor.
* Perform and document any intervention for unusual patient status and document patients' response to intervention.
* Evaluate patients' vascular access during treatment including arterial and venous monitoring pressures provide appropriate intervention as needed document and report any unusual findings to the nurse supervisor.
* Obtain all prescribed laboratory testing and prepare specimens for collection.
MAINTENANCE/TECHNICAL:
* Maintain environmental integrity and aesthetics - ensure all areas are safe and clean.
* Clean and disinfect dialysis machine surface chair equipment and surrounding area between treatments according to facility policy.
* Conduct all tasks necessary for preparation for dialysis treatment and document where appropriate.
* Perform all required pretreatment dialysis machine alarm testing including Pressure Holding (PHT).
* Initiate Solution Delivery System (SDS) system.
* Ensure that all blood spills are immediately cleaned with appropriate disinfectant according to facility policy.
* Prepare organize and efficiently utilize supplies and equipment to prevent wastage.
CLERICAL & ADMINISTRATIVE:
* Complete and document ongoing participation in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) activities.
* Enters all treatment data into the designated clinical application accurately and in a timely manner.
* Review treatment sheets for completeness ensure nursing signatures are documented and ensure omitted entries are completed or corrected where appropriate.
* Prepare initial patient chart for admission and compile paperwork for appropriate placement in chart.
* Prepare lab requisitions for prescribed or stat Lab specimens according to laboratory destination.
* Collect label appropriately prepare and store lab samples according required laboratory specifications.
* Ensure collection of lab specimens by appropriate lab courier.
OTHER:
* Perform additional duties as assigned.
ADDENDUM FOR PATIENT CARE TECHNICIANS WORKING IN THE HOME PROGRAMS (NOT HOME ASSIST):

* May assist HT RN on Home Visit as directed
* Reinforces PD / HHD education under supervision of qualified HT RN

* Cleaning and prepping treatment room; prep charts
* Preparing lab tubes and requisitions & assisting with lab draw days both pre and post draw (PCT certified phlebotomy or per state regulations)
* Clerical duties as assigned (faxing mailing to physician offices etc.)
* Obtain home hemo water sampling as directed by the HT RN
* Set-up of the home hemo machine and PD Cycler.
* Assist with exit site care when directed by HT RN.
* Warm dialysate solution when directed by the HT RN
* Draw dialysate solution for testing as directed by the HT RN
* Creates and sends patient reminders (supply inventory for order Kt/V collection bringing meds to clinic visit for review)
* Assembles/breaks down charts/thins charts
* Maintains logs as directed and applicable
* Inventory of Home Program
* Maintains par levels of home department supplies
* Files home patient packing slips/invoices
* Inventory for Patients
* Assists patient with supply management and contacting customer service

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/REQUIREMENTS:
* A graduate of an accredited surgical technologist program.
* Must be certified to perform CPR with 1 year of clinical experience in a related field.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
* Prepares and maintains medical equipment for surgical procedures.
* Before an operation, surgical technologists elp prepare the operating room by setting up surgical instruments and equipment, sterile drapes, and sterile solutions.
* Follows hospital regulations and industry procedures to tend to patient during pre-operation procedures.
* Performs pre-operation preparations to the patient's skin, body and medical equipment.
* Assemble both sterile and non-sterile equipment, as well as adjust and check it to ensure it is working properly.
* Get patients ready for surgery by washing, shaving, and disinfecting incision sites.

* Hold retractors, cut sutures, and help count sponges, needles, supplies, and instruments. Help prepare, care for, and dispose of specimens taken for laboratory analysis and help apply dressings.
* Operate sterilizers, lights, or suction machines, and help operate diagnostic equipment.
* After an operation, help transfer patients to the recovery room and clean and restock the operating room.

Explanatory Statement
House Bill 81 of 2019 The Central Service Technician and Surgical Technologist Regulation Act
Enacted 10/29/2020 - Effective 12/29/2020 (See attached HB for definitions for Central service technician
and Surgical technologist)
Section 301: Certification Central Service Technician (CST) hired after 12/29/2020 must:
Pass a nationally accredited central service exam for CST AND maintain one of the following: Certified registered central service technician credential OR Certified sterile processing and distribution technician credential
Exemption:
Law does not apply to an individual who has been employed or otherwise contracted for services as a central service technician by a health care facility on or before December 29, 2020.
Exemption Requirement: the facility shall maintain documentation of the CST's date of employment or the contract period when the central service technician provided services to the facility to verify that the CST meets the exemption requirements.
Section 302: Employment and continuing education
(a) New employees - CST has 18 months from date of hire to pass a nationally accredited central service exam for CST and obtain one of the two credentials noted above.
(b) Continuing education - Annually complete 10 hours of continuing education. (NOTE:
The continuing education required under this subsection shall be in areas related to the functions of a central service technician.)
(c) Facility responsibility - Facility must maintain documentation the CST meets the certification requirements
Section 501:
Surgical Technologist (ST) must meet at least one of the following:-
Successful completion of a Surgical Technologist program sponsored by an entity holding nationally recognized institutional or programmatic accreditation and hold and maintains a ST certification from an accredited certification program. [501(1)(i)] *
OR
-Successful completion of appropriate training program for surgical technology in the United States Army, Navy, or Air Force.
OR
-Provides evidence of an ST certification from an accredited certification program.
OR
-Was employed to practice surgical technology by the health care facility on or before December 29, 2020.
OR
-Was employed to practice surgical technology as the individual's primary function in another health care facility at any time during the two years immediately preceding December 29, 2020.
OR
-A healthcare facility may employ or contract an individual to practice surgical technology during the six-month period immediately following successful completion of a surgical technology program under paragraph (1) 9I), but may not continue to be employed or contracted with beyond that period without documentation the individual has obtained certification as required.
Section 502: Continuing education:
(a) An ST employed or contracted with the facility and not certified under section 501(1)(i) or has let the individual's certification lapse shall:
(1) with the continuing education requirements specified by the credentialing organization as necessary to keep the certification current and (2) provide proof of compliance with the continuing education requirements to the facility.
(b) Additional Requirement - An ST employed or contracted with the facility and not certified under section 501(1)(i) or has let the individual's certification lapse shall:
(1) complete 30 hours of relevant continuing education every two years in order to remain eligible to practice surgical technology; and (2) be responsible for proving, to the satisfaction of the health care facility, that the individual complies with this subsection.
(c) Verification-- A facility that employs or contracts with an ST shall verify the ST meets the continuing education requirements.
Section 503. Exception. A facility may employ or contract an ST who does not meet the requirements of section 501 to practice surgical technology if:
(1) after a diligent and thorough effort has been made, the facility is unable to employ or contract with a sufficient number of qualified STs who meet the requirements of section 501; and (2) the health care facility makes a written record of its efforts under (1) and retains the record at the facility.

Position Overview
The purpose of this position is to provide technical assistance and supportive patient care to meet the needs of individual patients throughout assigned areas.

Collect, report, and document clinical data. Take vital signs, height and weight, intake and output, pulse oximetry, and collect specimens

Requirements
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Operates all required equipment and machinery accurately and safely.
Reconciles instruments, supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedures with the surgeon's preference card.
Performs appropriate surgical scrub for initial surgical procedure and every procedure thereafter according to the established policy and procedure.
Adheres to Standard Precautions as appropriate utilizing protective barriers as appropriate (i.e. used face shields when appropriate).
Opens all sterile packs and supplies according to applications of sterile technique.
Performs sponges and sharps counts with the circulator when appropriate, based on the specific surgery being performed, prior to and before incision is closed.
Gowns and gloves the surgeon to maintain sterility.
Uses good hand hygiene practices.
Participates appropriately during the Time Out process prior to the start of the surgical procedure.
Assists with draping the patient.
Passes instruments and supplies to the surgeon during the procedure.
Maintains highest standards of sterile technique during procedure.
Manages and disposes of infectious and biohazardous waster appropriately.
Verifies specimens with the surgeon and hands-off to the circulator when applicable.
Works with the RN Circulator to ensure a smooth work flow for all members of the surgical team.
Immediately cleans/wipes and flushes instruments utilized during the surgical procedure in preparation for further cleaning in the SPD department.
Follows all policies, procedures, and infection control guidelines job responsibilities as a surgical scrub technician as provided by the facility Infection Control Plan as well as all applicable infection control policies and procedures.
Maintains and stocks equipment, instruments and supplies.
Puts equipment, instruments and supplies away in neat and orderly fashion, using proper stocking and storage techniques.
Attends variety of meetings, conferences, and seminars as required or directed.
Maintains continuing education as required, reporting information to Clinical Director and Administrative Director.
Demonstrates use of facility-based quality improvement/infection control/patient safety initiatives as part of daily workday.
Complies with all health and safety regulations and requirements.
Consistently fosters an atmosphere of mutual respect and cooperation through communication and cooperation with all members of the health care team.
Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education and skills competency.

Must complete appropriate continuing education to maintain certification and/or meet the education requirements of Act 80 of 2020 known as Certification of Central Service Technicians & Surgical Technologists Act.
Ability to work independently.
Familiarity with personal computer and ancillary equipment, telephone, electronic health record system and requirements for documentation, copier, and fax.
Ability to read instructions and understand medical terminology.
