Assists the circulator to perform surgical counts by following the policy and procedure guidelines. Prepares suture and dressing for surgeon use. Maintains a sterile field for surgical services. Ensures adherence to the sterile field by applying principles of aseptic techniques. Demonstrates initiative in professional development and continuing education. Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education, skills competency; supports department-based goals which contribute to the success of the organization. Serves as preceptor, mentor, and resource to new and less experienced surgical techs. Ability to perform basic arithmetic calculations as would be acquired through completion of high school. Ability to read and follow written instruction as would be acquired through completion of high school. Demonstrates superior knowledge of the various surgical equipment and advanced surgical instrumentation. Organization: Labor and Delivery Job Summary: The Certified Surgical First Assist performs in the expanded role as a CST First Assistant to the Surgeon, by performing positioning, prepping, and draping of patient, providing hemostasis, providing wound exposure and handling of sutures and tissue under the direction and supervision of the operating surgeon. Provides technical services and assists in operating room, Endoscopy Suite, and Sterile Processing as assigned and directed. May perform as a Surgical Technologist when not First Assisting. The unit features private labor and delivery rooms, postpartum care, a newborn nursery, and a Level II NICU, with support from Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital specialists. Staff benefit from a collaborative environment, structured orientation, and opportunities for growth, while patients receive personalized, family-centered care with access to advanced services for high-risk pregnancies and newborns. . Key Responsibilities: • Assists the surgical team during the operative procedure. • Knowledge of sterile technique and maintenance of sterility of surgical field. • Ability to circulate all operative cases independently. • Ability to care for patient in PACU in the immediate postoperative period. • Completes perioperative record accurately and completely. • Charges accurately for items used in the operating room. • Prepares rooms with appropriate instruments, sutures, supplies and equipment. • Assists the surgical team during operative procedures. • Consistently provides accurate and complete handoff communication to any healthcare provider according to hospital policy. Qualifications: Required: Graduate of an approved specific discipline OR successful completion of a surgical assistant training program during the applicant's service as a member of any branch of the armed forces of the United States.
