Key Responsibilities:
Firefighters respond to emergency fire scenes and assist in various fire suppression duties with the appropriate extinguishing agents to the source of the fire.

Conduct fire safety, home safety, fire extinguisher and pre-fire planning inspections.

Position Summary
The OR Surgical Assistant will provide intraoperative, perioperative, and supporting services to Dr. Berger in orthopedic surgical cases across multiple offsite locations. The role requires frequent travel, flexibility, and ability to work seamlessly across different surgical facilities. The Surgical Assistant works under the direct supervision of the orthopedic surgeon, collaborating with operating room teams, anesthesia, nursing, and support staff to ensure safe, efficient, and high‑quality patient care.
Key Responsibilities & Duties:
Preoperative / Preparation
Review the surgical schedule in advance, obtain the case history, imaging, special instrumentation or implant needs
Coordinate with the surgical facility / hospital staff to ensure OR setup, sterile instruments, implants, and disposables are available
Assist with patient positioning, prepping, skin sterilization, and draping
Verify patient identity, operative site, and consent documentation in conjunction with surgeon
Maintain sterile field protocols and assist with gowning/gloving of surgical team
Intraoperative Assistance
Serve as the first or second assistant (as permitted by state/facility) - help retract, suction, maintain exposure, assist with instrumentation, suture / close layers, place drains or devices, apply dressings
Anticipate surgeon's needs, pass instruments, manage implants, and maintain operative efficiency
Monitor tissue handling, maintain hemostasis, assist with cautery, irrigation, and suction
Assist in the insertion, positioning, and securing of orthopedic fixation devices, grafts, screws, plates, etc.
Coordinate with scrub techs, circulators, anesthesia, and other OR staff
Assist during intraoperative imaging (fluoroscopy) and navigation if applicable
Document intraoperative events, counts, and implant usage as required
Postoperative / Turnover
Assist in applying final dressings, splints, or immobilization devices
Aid with patient transfer to recovery area (PACU)
Clean, decontaminate, and turnover the OR between cases as needed

Cross‑Site Logistics & Coordination
Liaise with facility staff, vendors, and implant reps to ensure appropriate setup

Education / Training
Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program, or equivalent training (certified surgical technologist preferred)
Additional training or experience as a First Assistant / surgical assistant in orthopedic cases preferred
Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification; additional ACLS or specialty certifications a plus
Experience
Minimum 1-4 years of surgical assisting or scrub tech experience, ideally in orthopedic surgery
Experience with orthopedic instrumentation, implant systems, fixation hardware, and grafts
Prior exposure to multiple surgical facility settings or mobile/rotating OR assignments preferred
Competence in intraoperative imaging, navigation, or fluoroscopy assistance is a plus

Position Summary
Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse and Physician, performs the technical functions directly related to surgical asepsis, instrument preparation and presentation during surgical cases. Duties & Responsibilities
Follows established Operating Room policies and procedures Assists in the care, maintenance, distribution and control of equipment and supplies, both sterile and unsterile, which are used in operating procedures Assist with operations in the capacity of a Scrub Attendant. This includes arranging sterile articles, handing/passing serving instruments, dressing materials and suture appropriate to the scheduled operation while maintaining sterility and orderliness of instrument tables. Completes sponge, needle and instrument counts with RN prior to, during and after surgery according to hospital policy. Report discrepancies to the Charge Nurse and attending Physician. Under the direction of the RN prepares medications, (except narcotics), on the sterile field. Double checks dose with RN or MD prior to passing to MD during the case. Assist with infusions under direction of RN or MD. Assist with preparation of the Operating Room for surgical procedures prior to surgery by procuring equipment and supplies as indicated. In preparation for case, checks equipment for proper functioning, prior to case and after completion of case Participates in the daily stocking of Operating Room supplies (e.g. suture or OMNI supplies etc.) Initiates the cleaning of O.R. equipment (e.g. laser machines, etc.) on a daily basis and ensures use of plastic covers Assists with instrument clean-up during routine work hours or on after hour cases. During after hour cases is responsible for cleaning and packing of instruments Performs other duties as assigned Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
* Associate's degree in Surgical Technology from an approved Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation program.

Current certification as a Surgical Technologist from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting [NBSTSA]
