Summary:

Perform various surveying related tasks in order to produce precise and accurate results in a timely manner.

Essential Knowledge and Skill Requirements:

* Record survey measurements and descriptive data using notes, drawings, sketches, and various electronic data collectors
* Position and hold surveying rods to locate and record measurements
* Measures distance between survey points, using steel or cloth tape or surveyor's chain
* Places stakes at designated points and drives them into ground at specified elevation, using hammer or hatchet
* Cuts and clears brush and trees from line of survey, using brush hook, knife, ax, or other cutting tools

Basic Functional Job Requirements:

* Strong math skills
* Ability to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions to critical problems
* Good oral and written skills to communicate on multiple levels with various clients and co-workers.
* Proficient with MS Office programs

* Be able to lift/carry up to 50 pounds unassisted

Physical Work Environment:

* Work in dusty or dirty surroundings
* May be exposed to/ required to handle hazardous material such as diesel fuel and similar petroleum products with PPE provided to minimize exposure
* May be required to work at night
* May be exposed to extreme heat and cold environments of a limited basis

**Overview**

Responsible for assisting the Party Chief in creating surveys for construction, topographic, right-of-way and control survey tasks and engage in the planning phase with local officials, supervisors, engineers and contractors.

**Responsibilities**

+ Record the results of surveys including the shape, contour, location, elevation, and dimensions of land or land features; transmits survey data to the proper files in the computer network, and be able to acquire the data for field use.

+ Calls out reading or writes station number and reading in notebook.

+ Marks points of measurement with elevation, station number, or other identifying mark.

+ Measures distance between survey points with steel or cloth tape or surveyor's chain.

+ Marks measuring points with markers, paint sticks, tacks, scratches or stakes.

+ Verify the accuracy of survey data including measurements and calculations conducted at survey sites.

+ Adjust surveying instruments to maintain their accuracy.

+ Calculate heights, depths, relative positions, property lines, and other characteristics of terrain or current installations.

+ Compute geodetic measurements and interpret survey data to determine positions, shapes, and elevations of geomorphic and topographic features.

+ Determine longitudes and latitudes of important features and boundaries in survey areas using theodolites, transits, levels, and satellite-based global positioning systems (GPS).

+ Holds level or stadia rod at designated points to assist in determining elevations and laying out stakes for mapmaking, construction, land, and other surveys. Place stakes at designated points and drives them into ground at specified elevation.

+ Cuts and clears brush and trees or other possible obstructions from line of survey.

+ Load/unload equipment and prepare for daily jobs.

+ Assume other special activities and responsibilities from time to time as assigned

+ Exercises own initiative in seeking additional work, or helping others complete their job assignments upon completion of regular work assignment

+ Continually work to sharpen skills and improve on the understanding of surveying

+ Punctual in work assignments

+ Conduct self in a professional manner in the presence of clients and co-workers

+ Meet project schedules and budgets

**Qualifications**

**EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:**

+ At least 3 years of experience working in the construction field with layout or survey responsibilities.

**KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:**

+ Take reasonable care of your own and others' health and safety and of those who may be affected by the day-to-day delivery of this role by taking personal responsibility for working toward Wanzek's Zero Injury principles

+ Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, blueprints and procedure manuals

+ Add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals

+ Must have a developing knowledge of layout and survey work

+ Ability to understand and follow directions.

+ Must be at least 18 years of age.
