As a swiminstructor you are responsible for the safety of each class and teaching swim skills from the basics to our advanced swimmers using our curriculum. You will work to build water confidence within your students and encourage each student to rise to the best of their abilities. You can expect to be regularly communicating with students and fellow staff members as well as ongoing training throughout your employment.
We offer swim lessons from the age of 6 month - 13 years old and have lessons from parent/child to our pre-competitive swim team. Paid hands on training is provided for all instructors starting at $13 an hour and the opportunity for growth within our company.

The YMCA SwimInstructor is responsible for planning, organizing, and leading swim lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines. This role ensures a safe and positive learning environment for participants of all ages and skill levels while promoting water safety and confidence in swimming.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Instructs swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly.
Builds effective, authentic relationships with students and parents; helps them connect with each other and the YMCA. Encourages parent involvement and identifies potential volunteers.
Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refers students and parents to other programs.
Maintains records as required (i.e. attendance, progress reports, etc.).
Attends staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
Organizes and puts away needed class equipment. Reports damaged equipment.
Trains and supervises class aides as assigned.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Summary of Duties: Under general supervision, the Water Safety Instructor II is responsible for supervising and instructing swimming lessons in accordance with City and department policies.
Distinguishing Characteristics: This is the journey-level classification in the Water Safety Instructor series that follows diversified procedures and implements processes to accomplish end results, within guidelines. Immediate supervision is available upon request.

Typical Decisions: The incumbent must effectively interpret and implement the Red Cross curriculum and guidelines to match those of the department. Minimum Qualifications:
Knowledge of: Current swimming techniques; CPR and first aid; water safety policies, rules, and practices; teaching methods and techniques.
Skill in: Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing; demonstrating all swimming strokes; interacting tactfully and effectively with the public; administering first aid and CPR; demonstrating water safety skills.
Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent.
Experience: Two (2) years of experience as a Water Safety Instructor.
Any work related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements
Licenses and Certifications: American Red Cross issued: First Aid, CPR, Automated External Defibrillator, Water Safety Instructor, and Lifeguard certifications required at the time of appointment.
Conditions of Employment: Must pass a drug test, driver license check, criminal history background check, periodic CJIS background check (for positions requiring access into Police buildings) and social security number verification check.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions: Must possess mobility to work in and around City pools and facilities; strength, stamina, and mobility to perform light to medium physical work; to demonstrate swimming and safety techniques; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio. The job involves frequent walking to identify problems or hazards. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator. Positions in this classification bend, stoop, kneel, twist and reach when teaching and maintaining pool area. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 50 pounds, or heavier weights with the use of proper equipment.
Employees work in and around City pools and facilities and are exposed to loud noise levels, hot temperatures, chemical hazards, and hazardous physical substances and fumes.
