The JCCSF has immediate openings for part-time swim instructors. Primary duties: Teach swim classes for infants, children, teens and adults using the JCCSF Swim School curriculum. All JCCSF Aquatics staff are expected to have outstanding customer service skills and be committed to Aquatics safety standards. Upon hire, Swim Instructors must complete 4 in person training courses (12 hours minimum) at a training rate of $23.50. After successful completion of the Swim Instructor trainings, the hourly increases to $26.20. RESPONSIBILITIES Teach classes according to the JCCSF Swim School curriculum. Must be at least 16 with a valid work permit Create a warm, friendly and safe environment for all classes. Check in with the deck coordinator 15 minutes before the start of the first class. Be in assigned teaching station 5 minutes before every class, ready to teach. Wear the JCCSF swim instructor uniform at all times while teaching. Greet all students as they arrive for class. Evaluate students' progress every class. Maintain direct and clear communication with the Program Coordinator about students' progress. Assist Program Coordinator with pool setups. Render first aid and CPR within the scope of employee's certifications. Attend all mandatory trainings or staff meetings as scheduled. Understand and honor JCCSF mission, core values and customer service standards inside and outside the Aquatics Center. Learn and follow safety and emergency preparedness procedures for the JCCSF Aquatics Department. Perform additional duties as needed. DEFINITION Swim Instructors provide planning and instruction for aquatic programs, lessons and camps within the guidelines of the City of Piedmont's comprehensive aquatics program. Job Description The City of American Canyon is seeking individuals who will serve as Lifeguards or Lifeguard/WSI. Lifeguard/Lifeguard/WSI observe the activity of swimmers in and around the American Canyon Aquatics Pool and provide lifesaving services as needed. Lifeguards also assist and teach with swim lessons and other pool-related activities. The position may be scheduled during hours that may include early mornings, nights, weekends and holidays and are considered temporary/part-time and are limited to no more than 1,000 hours per fiscal year. Qualifications Lifeguard certifications preferred but will provide training to potential candidates. THIS RECRUITMENT IS OPEN UNTIL FILLED, AND MAY CLOSE AT ANY TIME. * APPLICATIONS ARE SCREENED ON A REGULAR BASIS* Under direct supervision of the Recreation Supervisor, Lifeguards / Swim Instructors will ensure the safety of facility patrons by preventing and responding to emergencies and instruct swim lessons for participants of all ages. In addition, Swim Instructors are responsible for instructing all swim lesson participants, ensuring the safety of all participants in their class, instructing and evaluating students participating in swim lessons, submitting completed participant report cards on time and attending mandatory meetings and training sessions as scheduled. The individual must be able to represent the City of Milpitas Recreation Services in a professional manner and follow the City's and Recreation Services polices and regulations. * This recruitment will be used to staff for year-round and seasonal positions. Shifts are typically 4 hours a day: * August - June: Monday through Saturday between 5:30AM and 8:30PM * June - August: Summer shifts vary between 5:30AM and 9:00PM everyday * Maintaining constant surveillance of patrons in the facility * Acting immediately and appropriately to ensure the safety of patrons in the event of an emergency * Providing emergency care and treatment as required until the arrival of emergency medical services * Performing various maintenance duties as directed to maintain a clean and safe facility * Preparing and maintaining appropriate reports * Having thorough knowledge of rescue techniques * Understanding and enforcing of facility rules, policies and procedures, having leadership, public relations skills and decision-making skills. Lifeguard / Swim Instructor: * Minimum age at time of hire is 15 years old. * Knowledge of and the ability to demonstrate skills in swim lesson instruction. * Ability to work independently and possess energy and enthusiasm. * Pre-Employment testing of swimming skills and knowledge through a Lifeguard Academy * Experience in working with children (3 - 17 years of age) and adults (18+ years of age) is preferred. About the Opportunity The Trefethen Aquatic Center is looking for new Lifeguards and Swim Instructors to add to their aquatic team. All staff members are expected to work as both a Lifeguard and a Swim Instructor. Responsibilities: Arrive to work on-time and properly attired to perform duties. Enforce facility rules and follow policies and procedures. Open and Close the pool according to guidelines set by the Trefethen Aquatics Center. Teach swim lessons as needed. Assist in day-to-day operations (including, but not limited to, staff scheduling, submitting timesheets, light cleaning, and checking water chemistry). Addressing issues of concern with patrons. Takes initiative to ensure safety in the facility. Effectively scan their zone of protection and be able to respond to any emergency. Limits conversation with members, guests, and other staff members in order to maintain effective scanning. Anticipate, recognize, and react to all aquatic emergencies, and provide necessary reporting to direct supervisor. Must be able to sit for extended periods of time while maintaining optimum scanning vigilance of the pool. Must follow all policies and procedures set forth in the Mills College Aquatic Center Staff Policy Handbook. Maintain a professional demeanor during scheduled shift. Uphold a standard of care in all aquatic emergencies. Respond to all aquatic emergencies as described by the Emergency Action Plan. If needed, finds an appropriate approved staff member to substitute for scheduled shift at least 24 hours prior to scheduled shift. Be able and ready to sell swim passes and swim gear at the Front Desk.
