Competition of Principles of Youth Development (e-learning), YMCA Swim Lessons Instructor v6: Orientation (e-learning) YMCA Swim Lessons Instructor v6: Observe & Communicate (e-learning) and YMCA Swim Instructor Certification. Staff that are not 16 at the time of hire (or not yet 16 but are currently teaching swim lessons), will need to be certified within 90 days once they turn 16. Recertification every two years will be re-taking the full class or recertifying with Advanced Swimming Techniques or Advanced Teaching Techniques. Must attend at least one, seven-week session of training with an experienced instructor before teaching independently (shadowing). Must have experience in water safety. Must have knowledge of teaching basic swimming strokes to all levels, and have the ability to demonstrate each skill effectively. Ability to establish and maintain harmonious relationships with staff, volunteers, members, and participants is essential.
