Essential Functions Include:
Ability to focus and maintain the 30 second standard.
Performs life-saving techniques including in-pool rescues, CPR, AED, and Oxygen administration and first aid.
Respond to emergencies.
Cautions swimmers regarding unsafe activities and enforces facility rules.
Cleans the pool deck area and locker rooms.
Installs or removes lane lines and starting blocks.
Must have the ability to perform the physical and cognitive skills necessary to achieve and maintain a lifeguard and CPR certification as prescribed by the agency.
Responds to concerns and requests from members, residents and guests with a sense of urgency and take the necessary corrective action including follow up.
Attends all appropriate staff meetings and required in-service trainings.
Customer Service oriented.
Teaches participants of all ages and swimming ability for camp lessons, group lessons and private lessons.
Instruct proper stroke technique and safety skills.
Assists with general maintenance and cleanliness of the pool, pool area, and locker rooms.
Have attendance rosters, equipment and other teaching materials ready prior to the beginning of each class.
Maintain accurate attendance and progress reports for all students.
Maintain positive environment in the class by communicating progress with each swimmer's parent.
Complete updated and accurate skill sheets on each swimmer.
Required to attend weekly in-service meetings.
Report any problems to pool manager and/or lesson coordinators immediately.
Requirements
Must be 15 years of age or older (work permit required for 15-year-olds).

What you'll do:
Provide a high-level of customer service to members, program participants and guests at all times
Supervise and guard the pool and aquatic facility and ensure participants adhere to all YMCA aquatic guidelines and procedures.

• Monitor student progress in all classes. Report progress to the program director and inquiring parents.
• Be available before and after class to speak with parents.
• Assist the aquatics program in answering parent questions and concerns, and enforce all safety rules and regulations of the pool.
• Find a substitute teacher if one is needed or show for class if there is not one available.
• Keep accurate records of attendance and skills covered on a daily basis.
• Train and supervise class aides as assigned.
• Incorporate the YMCA values and mission statement in the teaching of classes.
Safety:
• Dress according to YMCA dress code, having on the appropriate shirt and nametag. Dress in appropriate athletic attire.
• Double-check the clothing safety of all participants for jewelry, gum, and clothing violations that can result in injury.
• Double-check and set-up all equipment prior to class.
• Know the location of the first aid kit, nearest phone, and incident reports. Maintain current certification in CPR and First Aid.
• Follow all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Complete incident and accident reports as necessary.
• Ensure emergency procedures are followed, and notify supervisor of any incidents and accidents immediately.
• Organize and put away needed class equipment. Report damaged equipment.

JOB SUMMARY

Duties include but are not limited to: following appropriate curriculum for the swim level assigned, monitoring and communicating progress to parents, keeping daily records, maintaining constant surveillance to ensure the safety of participants in the water, adhering to and enforcing all policies and procedures, completing required weekly in-service trainings, and assist with maintaining the cleanliness of the pool deck. Additionally, will recognize and prevent potential hazardous or accident situations. This is an at-will position.

Hours: Weekday and weekend shifts beginning at 6am and ending at 10pm.
Shifts are generally 4-6 hours long but vary depending on age and experience.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
* Must be comfortable in the water with the ability to swim 200 yards using either a breaststroke or freestyle without stopping, tread water for two minutes without the use of arms and hands and perform a feet first surface drive to retrieve a 10-pound brick from the bottom of a 12 ft. pool.
* Excellent eyesight including close, distance, and peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus for extended periods of time.
* Strong voice, phone, and listening skill with the ability to hear, understand, and distinguish speech and other sounds (i.e. machinery or other alarms, equipment malfunction, phone or other communication device, etc.) Moderate exposure to noise from patrons, staff or equipment operation in adjacent areas.
* Capacity to stand, walk, or sit for extended periods of time.
* Ability to lift, push, move, or carry 50 pounds or more while performing training or actual rescue, moving equipment, and/or supplies.
* Moderate exposure to chemicals such as chlorine, cleaning solvents, grease, fumes, airborne particles, etc.
* Ability to spend the majority of time outdoors and tolerate a variety of weather conditions, including high heat and humidity.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND TRAINING
* The ideal candidate will be service oriented, dependable and reliable, with a strong sense of safety and responsibility for the teaching and care of children and adults.
* Previous experience interacting with children is preferred.
* Must be 15 or older with reliable transportation to and from work.
* Confident in ability to swim and comfortable in the water for long periods of time.
* Confident in instructing swim lessons for individuals of all ages and abilities.
* Ability to focus for periods of time with attention to detail is essential.
* Strong and effective communication skills with the ability and desire to provide quality customer service is essential.
* Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
* Available to work a flexible schedule including mornings, weekends, and holidays.
* Ellis and Associates Lifeguard certified, or willing to become certified within 30 days of hire (training provided by the Glen Ellyn Park District).
* Proficient in MS Outlook or other email system for communication, with aptitude to learn and use other systems/applications.
* First Aid and CPR/AED certification required or able to obtain within 30 days of hire.
PLEASE NOTE: Applicants under the age of 16 will be required to work within specific parameters and submit a Work Permit prior to starting work. Expectation is that all staff will be available for the entire pool season (or as close as possible) with a limit of one week of absence for a scheduled family vacation or similar that should be discussed at time of hire. Your Typical Responsibilities:

Supervise and guard the pool and aquatic facility and ensure participants adhere to all YMCA aquatic guidelines and procedures.
Examine injured persons and administer first aid or cardiopulmonary resuscitation, if necessary, using training and medical supplies and equipment.
Perform appropriate water rescues, when necessary, using rescue techniques and equipment.
Contact emergency medical personal in case of serious injury.
Actively participate in obtaining further water safety certifications.
Attend all in-service trainings and staff meetings as scheduled by supervisor or center leadership team.
Requirements:
Must be at least 16 years of age (swim instructor) / 15 years of age (lifeguard)
Must successfully complete the American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification training or have current YMCA or American Red Cross certification as well as current First Aid, AED, CPR and Oxygen Administration certifications.
Physical mobility to properly use aquatic equipment to rescue a 200 lb. person and meet other physical requirements required for job certification.
Must be mentally alert to dangerous situations in order to assure the safety of all swimmers.
Must be physically and mentally able to respond to emergencies and administer CPR and First Aid effectively.
Ability to meet physical requirements based on job description.

The Position:

A Swim Instructor at British Swim School teaches swim lessons to children and adults, starting at 3 months old using our fun, gentle and progressive methods. You will receive extensive training to build your confidence and ability to work with a variety of swimmers and abilities. Having fun and interacting with our swimmers is an important part of the role! A strong focus is placed on providing survival swim techniques living out the British Swim School mission and making a big impact on decreasing drowning.
Your Responsibilities:
Provide instruction for two to three sessions weekly (interested in 8-12 hours weekly).
Learn and follow British Swim School's curriculum to ensure safe and competent lessons and environment.
Comfort level teaching all student ages, from infant through adult.
Work in an environment where noise levels are usually moderate to high and stand in the water for up to 4 consecutive hours.
Be prepared for shifts and support the team through regular engagement with team communications.
Minimum Qualifications:
Active Lifeguard Certification
Available Mondays and Tuesdays (4pm - 8pm) and able to work other weeknights and Saturdays (8am - noon).
High school diploma or equivalent.
Availability to work at both Northside Chicago locations. (See location details below)
Enthusiastic personality.
Comfortable in and around the water. Strong swimming skills are a plus but can be taught and developed!
Must complete all required British Swim School Aquatics-specific training and testing.
Must maintain existing certifications throughout the length of employment.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working with children.
Swimming experience: 1-2 years preferred but not required.
Customer service skills: 1 year preferred.
Locations:
British Swim School of Northern Chicagoland operates from two locations; one on the Northwest side of Chicago (60630) and one in Rosemont (60018). Your application is for these, and no other, British Swim School locations. Both locations require transfers from train lines to bus if commuting by public transportation.
