The Aquatics Department at The Jewish Community Center in Manhattan serves approximately 1,200 students every week, who are involved in group lessons (parent and child, after school, teen/tween and adult), private lessons.
The JCC is looking for an upbeat, friendly instructor with a desire to share a love of swim + safety to children. Classes vary from parent child groups (6 months old-3 years old), toddler drop-off classes, school age learn to swim + private lessons for all ages.
Qualification Required:
Must have CPR certification, WSI (preferred), Lifeguard experience, and non-profits work environments.

Primary Responsibilities
Instruct swim classes with energy, enthusiasm, and a clear, animated presence that engages swimmers of all levels.
Demonstrate punctuality by setting up your teaching area ahead of time, checking in at the front desk for any updates, and beginning and ending each class promptly.
Apply knowledge of swim technique and water safety; a background in competitive swimming or teaching lessons is helpful but not required.
Follow the Chelsea Piers Swim School curriculum and be able to demonstrate in-water drills and the four competitive strokes confidently.
Manage class structure effectively based on swimmers' skill levels, and communicate technical points clearly and age-appropriately.
Be a team player - support your fellow instructors and be flexible in adjusting to different class needs or pool assignments.
Prepare for each class by knowing your students, tracking their progress, and keeping tidy, accessible notes.
Complete progress reports and report cards by program deadlines to provide valuable feedback to families.
Compensation: $18 - $24 per hour, depending on experience
Schedule: Part-time; Ideally one weekday evening and one weekend morning per week. Classes run about 30-40 minutes from 4:00pm-6:00pm on weekday evenings; 8:00am-12:00pm on weekend mornings.

Prior experience as a competitive swimmer or teaching swim lessons is preferred, but not required

Water Safety Instructor
Conduct classes in a fun and gentle environment, following current teaching methods, policies and safety and emergency procedures as detailed in the New Settlement Community Center training manual, and as directed by the Aquatics Director.
Attend staff meetings and in-service trainings as requested by Aquatics Director or Center Director.
Cleaning up pool equipment at the end of shifts.
Complete assignments such as certificate signing and progress reports prior to the specified deadline.
Able to switch to the role of a Lifeguard if requested by management.
Lifeguard
Maintains active surveillance of the pool area, checking for hazardous conditions when arriving.
Knows and reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with NSCC policies, procedures, and completes related reports as required.
Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
Maintains accurate records as required by the NSCC and/or the state health department code.
Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
Performs chemical testing when not guarding, as required, and takes appropriate action.
Cleans pool equipment at the end of shifts and clean sup spills or messes left by community.
Properly cleans and reconstructs the pool vacuum when instructed by shift supervisor or Aquatics Director.

Child abuse prevention training within 30 days of hire date.
