Key Responsibilities

General Function:
The Private SwimInstructor serves members though Private Swimming sessions. S/he builds relationships with members and program participants through effective and positive customer service while providing a safe instructional environment.

Private Swim Instruction:
Develops Swim programs/lessons that are specifically tailored to the members' goals and physical limitations

Hillsborough YMCA is seeking a Community Safety/Lifeguard Instructor to teach the American Red Cross lifeguarding course to our community members and staff. Our lifeguard instructors help participants to achieve their goals in feeling confident with lifeguarding and life-saving skills.

POSITION SUMMARY:
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Teaches potential lifeguards to the Red Cross standard and evaluate to the objectives of each rescue and CPR. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.
Essential Functions:
You will teach the following classes:
· Lifeguard training (full classes)
· Lifeguard review
· Oxygen (not mandatory)
· CPR/AED and First Aid
General Functions:
· Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Completes related reports as required.
· Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
· Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
· Attends all staff meetings and in-service training.
· Maintains effective, positive relationships with the members, participants and other staff.
· Maintains a safe, instructional, and supportive environment
· Emotional resiliency and cognitive abilities to carry out job responsibilities, ability to establish and maintain appropriate professional relationships, interpersonal skills to interact effectively with individuals and groups respecting social and cultural diversity and to maintain appropriate boundaries.
Other Duties:
· Arrives to work five (5) minutes before shift starts
· Wear appropriate and professional uniform/attire
Qualifications
Minimum age of 18,
Must be an American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor to include CPR/AED/First Aid/Oxygen. Oxygen (not mandatory)
Must have experience teaching American Red Cross training classes

Our Ridley Area YMCA is currently hiring for Lifeguards and Aquatic Instructors. Shift hours and days will vary.
Maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas. Provides direct leadership, instruction, and motivation for students in swimming classes. Creates a positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Maintains active surveillance of the pool area while pool is in operation. Performs lifeguard duties with Lifeguard II and/or Head Lifeguard.
Instructs swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly.
Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures. Completes related reports as required.
Maintains effective, positive relationships with the members, participants and other staff while enforcing pool rules and regulations.
Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refers students and parents to other programs.
Maintains records as required (i.e. attendance, progress reports, etc.).
Organizes and puts away needed class equipment. Reports damaged equipment.
Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area. Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state Health Department code.
Performs safety and program equipment checks and ensures equipment is available as needed.
Checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving.
Performs: chemical testing, bathing loads, and water conditions, as required, and documents results and takes appropriate action.
Completes accident/incident reports for any occurrences while on duty.
Maintains a professional attitude and appearance at all times.
Attends all staff meetings and in-service trainings.
Any other duties deemed necessary to ensure the success of the Community YMCA of Eastern Delaware County.
QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Minimum age of 15.2. Certifications: Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross CPR/AED, and First Aid.3. Certification: Current YMCA Lifeguard or American Red Cross Lifeguard.4. Ability to demonstrate (pre-hire) and maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness.5. Completion of required trainings. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: 1. Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility. Remain alert with no lapses of consciousness.2. Meet strength and lifting requirements.3. See and observe all sections of an assigned zone or area of responsibility.
