Reports To: Program Director / School Manager
Pay Rate: $27-$30 per hour
Current SNAP class time: Sundays 2 PM-5/5:30 PM (subject to scheduling needs).
Required availability: Either Saturday or Sunday between 3 PM-8 PM.

The SNAP Instructor is responsible for providing individualized swim instruction to children enrolled in Aqua-Tots' SNAP (Students Needing Adaptive Programming) program. This role focuses on water safety, swim skill development, and confidence-building in a supportive and adaptive environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Provide swim instruction exclusively to students in the SNAP program.
Adapt lessons to meet the needs, abilities, and learning styles of each child.
Ensure a safe, structured, and inclusive environment during all lessons.
Communicate progress and goals with parents, caregivers, and guardians.
Maintain consistency and reliability in attendance and scheduling.
Follow Aqua-Tots' established safety protocols and curriculum standards.
Participate in required training and professional development.
Qualifications
Prior experience working with children with disabilities (educational, therapeutic, or caregiving setting).
Strong interpersonal skills with patience, empathy, and adaptability.
Ability to provide positive reinforcement and encouragement to students.
No prior swim instruction required; training will be provided.
Must be dependable and maintain 90% attendance throughout employment. Also available to work weekend shifts (Saturday or Sunday, 3-8 PM).
NO seasonal availability. Must be available year-round.

Under the Aquatics Director/Coordinator, the Head Swim Instructor is responsible for maintaining a safe and engaging aquatics environment for our swimming lessons. Run in-service and onboarding training for swim instructors.

Administer First Aid and/or CPR as necessary

Supervise Aquatic staff, in the absence of the Aquatics Director/Coordinator, to ensure all facility policies are being enforced and observed by staff.
Follows logical skill progressions and covers appropriate amount of information in time available.
Communicates effectively with students in a patient, friendly manner.
Ability to support aquatics in a dynamic and changing environment.
Ability to lead a group of swim instructors through certification training as well as regular in-service training.
Ability to lead by example and be a role model through shadow-teaching and corrective feedback.
Ability to manage a pool deck during swim lessons and in the event of an emergency.
Proven change capacity and ability to adapt to changing situations and department needs

Minimum five (5) years' experience as a swim instructor; Previous experience in supervision of staff preferred
YMCA Swim Lessons Instructor Trainer Certification (must obtain within 12 months of hire) Current YMCA Swim Lesson (YSL) Certification or American Red Cross WSI Certification (must obtain YSL within 6 months)

Current CPR PRO/AED and must be from one of the following certifying organizations: American Red Cross, American Heart Association or Health & Safety Institute

Qualifications and Physical Demands
Level I - Entry level of a series. Little or no experience required. Considerable training will be provided prior to the summer swim sessions.
Level II - Mid level of a series. 1-2 years of experience required. Considerable training will be provided prior to the summer swim sessions.
Level III - Advanced level of a series. 3 or more years of experience required. Considerable training will be prior provided to the summer swim sessions.
Level IV - Increased level of responsibility. 5 or more years of experience required. Provides instruction to a team.
Conditions of Employment

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
* Serve as lifeguard during pool hours and at all events held at the pool; observe and supervise activities of swimmers in the pool and the surrounding area; enforce applicable pool rules and regulations.
* Prepare lesson plans and conduct swimming classes for beginners through advanced levels; instruct students in proper swimming techniques and various water safety measures.
* Review swimming techniques of students; provide additional training as necessary; ensure adherence to proper safety precautions.
* Rescue persons in distress or in danger of drowning; provide emergency response as necessary including providing first aid and CPR.
* Participate in facilities clean-up and maintenance; remove and replace pool covers; test and monitor water chemistry and temperature; adjust as appropriate; monitor operation of pumps, filters and chlorinators.
* Respond to questions and inquiries from the public regarding pool regulations, use of facilities and various aquatic programs offered.
* Open and close pool and related facilities.
* Register the public for swim classes; maintain a variety of records and reports.
* Perform basic cashiering and other office work as assigned.
* Perform related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Education/Training:
Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.
Experience:
One year of swimming instruction experience is preferred.
License or Certificate:
Applicants must be 16 years of age or older by date of hire. If applicant is still in high school, must provide California Worker's Permit.
Possession of a Lifeguard Training Certificate or equivalent is preferred. Lifeguard Training Certification can be provided by City of La Mesa staff once hired, however, continued employment will be contingent upon successful completion of lifeguard training certification requirements.
Possession of a Water Safety Instructor's Certificate is desirable.
Must complete California Title 22 requirement within six months of appointment.
Examination Process

Only those candidates whose qualifications most closely meet the needs of the City will be invited to participate in a skills screening and oral interview. The skills screening will consist of basic swimming skills, treading water, and retrieving a 10 lb. brick off the bottom of the pool at 10 feet deep. Submission of an application does not guarantee participation in the testing and interview process. Eligible candidates will be notified when dates have been established.
NOTE:Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a pre-employment medical evaluation, including alcohol/drug screen, and background investigation.

This effort establishes the support of the Antiterrorism (AT) Leadership Training Program. It includes all Antiterrorism training for which CENSECFOR has been tasked with course management responsibility. Services provided shall include, but are not limited to, course and curriculum development, training management and oversight, and instructional delivery. The training provided by the instructor will encompass the course scope, learning objectives, and Navy instructions. This support will be accomplished predominately at CENSECFOR Headquarters site at Little Creek, VA, and at CENSECFOR Detachments at Chesapeake, VA, San Diego, CA, and Pearl Harbor, HI to satisfy the AT training requirements for CENSECFOR. These services shall be provided in support of CENSECFOR programs under the coordination of the CENSECFOR Director of Training (DOT) and CENSECFOR COR.

Required Past Experience & Clearance Level:
Must have past successful experience in Antiterrorism Program Management, to include completion of at least 3 years' assignment as an Installation Antiterrorism Officer (ATO), Installation Security Officer or Assistant Installation Security Officer: OR
Must have completed a tour of duty as Echelon 2 command antiterrorism/force protection staff officer: OR
Must have equivalent experience with NCIS, Afloat Training Group or TYCOM level or above AT staff, AT assessment team or AT training team.
Must have a SECRET security clearance.
Although not required, Maritime Interdiction Operations (MIO), preferably as a VBSS Boarding Officer would be a valuable added qualification.
Required Qualifications:
Must have attended the Navy Instructor Training Course (NITC) (A-012-0077) (or military service equivalent), OR
Academic credentialing (teacher/professor). Currently, only Tidewater Community College course MILT 5100 meets the requirements, OR
Instructor training via an academic institution.
At a minimum, shall possess:
High personal standards of technical knowledge and professional competence in delivering training material.
The ability to perform in a military environment.
Familiarity with the organization and hierarchy of the U. S. Navy, military rank/grade structure.
Knowledge of Navy and military terminology, and shipboard/installation environments and configurations.
Knowledge of basic and advanced training techniques and of computer technology applications as they apply to instructional delivery.
Instructors are expected to maintain the personal standards of technical and professional levels of competence that are at least equal to that of the Department of the Navy military personnel undergoing training.
The ability to instill morale and motivation of student and instructional personnel shall be maintained at a maximum level to ensure a favorable environment for learning.
