JOB SUMMARY The Swim Instructor is responsible for providing swim instruction in the MJCC's 25- yard Main Pool and Warm Water Pool. This position ensures safety by supporting the lifeguard in enforcing all rules, regulations, and policies during class times. Instructors must be mature and work as a team members. ESSENTIAL DUTIES (These examples represent the essential functions of the position. They are not, however, inclusive of all duties the position may perform.) 1. Plan and conduct swim lessons for swimmers of different ages and skill levels, potentially including parent/child lessons and group lessons (well-rounded instructors may be invited to teach private lessons after six months or more teaching group lessons). 2. Impart knowledge of swimming in a friendly, encouraging manner, demonstrating skills as needed, and work with students of a wide variety of ages and backgrounds. 3. Demonstrate exceptional guest service, problem solving skills, ability to communicate effectively, show adaptability and flexibility, be dependable, be organized, show initiative and have an energetic, positive, and outgoing personality. 4. Communicate with clients and management staff in a clear and concise manner. 5. Commit to teaching full sessions of group lessons. QUALIFICATIONS Required: Age 15 or older Knowledge of swimming strokes and techniques Ability to pass a criminal background check Previous experience teaching swimming (in some cases extensive experience as a competitive swimmer may be sufficient) Preferred: Current American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification (certified lifeguards have the opportunity to work additional hours - up to 29.5 per week, depending on scheduling needs and availability) We are not able to sponsor employment visas for this position . PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS Duties are performed in a warm, humid pool environment that can be noisy and filled with people. Instructors should have the physical flexibility required to demonstrate and perform all six of the basic swimming strokes as well as being able to tread water and float on front and back. Duties require the ability to push, pull, lift, or drag up to 50 lbs (or more, in the case of a pool rescue), either individually or with assistance. Duties require ability to lift or otherwise handle young children. Duties require patience with swimmers of all ages and the ability to remain calm in high stress situations. Duties require strong ability to remain alert and watchful. Duties require the ability to swim and move quickly and decisively in emergency situations, this includes a full range of motion, and normal-range acuity in vision and hearing. The Swim Instructor teaches swim lessons in accordance with YMCA policies and Y-USA instructor training. The Swim Instructor builds relationships with swim lesson participants in beginner, intermediate, and advanced swim lesson sessions. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Plan and teach swim instruction to Y swim lesson participants, offering a variety of program activities depending on swimmer ability and swimming level. Maintain equipment inventory by selecting, storing, and issuing swim lesson equipment as needed. Evaluate individuals' abilities, needs, and physical conditions, offering alternative movements and activities to accommodate and keep the class enjoyable. Explain and enforce safety rules and regulations about the Aquatic facility and swim lesson equipment to swim lesson participants. Monitor participant progress and administer feedback to swim lesson participants and/or families, through conversation and written materials. Track attendance of participants and manage group lessons of up to ten participants. Knows, reviews, and applies all safety, emergency, and child abuse prevention policies and procedures, responding to emergency situations in accordance with YMCA protocol. Attends all staff meetings and Inservice training to maintain skills, build connections with staff, and exchange ideas with others. QUALIFICATIONS: At least 15 years of age YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor certification preferred. Exhibits great communication and listening skills to work with staff and members, delivering a quality experience Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community. Completion of YMCA required training upon hire. Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgrounds.
