Mandatory Child Abuse Reporting Certification (or willingness to obtain upon hire). Ability to demonstrate swim skills and maintain certification-level readiness. Previous experience working with children in aquatic or instructional settings preferred. Understands that the YMCA is committed to compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Position: Water Safety Instructor Hours: Varies (Weekdays, Evenings and Weekends) Reports To: Aquatics Program Coordinator Job Summary: Teach swimming lessons to youth and adults as directed by the Aquatics Coordinator, using techniques and procedures specified by the program. Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions: Provide swim instruction to students of all ages and abilities in a positive, fun, learning environment. Experience working with children and/or adults in small groups Monitor participants at all times, supervising check-in and check-out so that students leave with authorized adults. Maintain a professional appearance Maintain a safe environment for all participants. Prepare lesson plans to correlate with participant level and level being taught. Fill out progress reports properly prior to the last day of lessons including positive/encouraging comments. Setup/put away equipment and maintain an organized pool environment. Enforce all established pool rules during and in-between lessons Follow established emergency procedures and respond appropriately in an emergency situation Arrive on time (15 minutes prior to start of lessons) Find substitutes as needed and inform your supervisor. Effectively communicate with parents, and/or participants, staff and aquatics coordinator. Perform other related duties as assigned by the aquatics coordinator. Attend all required aquatics staff in-service training and meetings. Education/Experience: Age 16 or older Current Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification Current CPR and First Aid Certification Must maintain certifications during employment with district Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of stroke mechanics and ability to correct participant strokes Knowledge of established pool rules and emergency procedures Ability to work independently under limited supervision and as part of a team Ability to work with supervisors and coworkers in a timely and professional manner Ability to provide a level of customer service that meets/exceeds customer expectations and satisfaction Ability to professionally exhibit cultural sensitivity, patience, and understanding in the course of work duties Ability to relate to and work with individuals representing a variety of diverse backgrounds and cultures Anticipated Work Schedule: This is a part-time, non-benefited position that will work less than 20 hours per week; work shifts will primarily be summer day time, evening and/or weekend hours. Physical Requirements: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
