Type: Part Time Salary/Pay Rate: $18.00/ hour
Responsibilities of the Swim Instructor - This Swim Instructor position is responsible for instructing group swim classes and private lessons as assigned by the Aquatic Supervisor; evaluating programs and making recommendations for improvements to the Aquatic Supervisor. Swim Instructors will deliver a safe and excellent customer service experience to our residents, members and patrons while enforcing and adhering to existing policies and procedures. The Swim Instructor position will work cooperatively with all Aquatics and facility personnel to promote customer satisfaction with programs and facilities with effective communication skills both verbally and in writing. Group Lesson Instructors and Private Swim Lesson Instructors act as public relations representative for the Aquatics Department and The Center of Clayton. Staff will inform supervisor of all positive and negative information regarding the physical facility, aquatics staff or general public. Swim Instructors will monitor attendance policies and keep patrons abreast of class information and registration deadlines. As well as, ensure program safety by monitoring class area and notifying program supervisor of any maintenance or safety concerns, as well as documentation of accidents or incidents. Swim Instructors may utilize program equipment and supplies and creatively develop new uses for enhancing swim instruction and are encouraged to secure and maintain any discipline-specific certifications necessary. Swim Instructors for both Group Lessons and Private Lessons must attend all staff meetings or training sessions as required.
Swim Instructor Job Qualifications - Must be knowledgeable in swimming technique and teaching skills with strong communication skills. Minimum of 1 year experience working in aquatic environment, American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification is preferred. Swim Instructors must have availability every Monday evening 4:45-8pm, Wednesday evening 4:45-8pm or every Saturday from 9:00am-12:00pm. Options are available for year round or summer only positions.

The Swim Instructor position teaches a progressive swim program to individuals ages six (6) months to adult. This position is responsible for ensuring the safety of all classes, completing the appropriate records, and providing an enjoyable environment for students to learn.
Current pay for the Swim Instructor position begins at $16.00 per hour. Additional compensation is provided for employees who return after each season.
Position Responsibilities:
Ensure a comfortable and safe environment for students to learn
Teach individuals in each class based on the structure established in the Shawnee Swim Lessons Manual
Communicate with students and parents the class status regarding cancellations, changes or information pertinent to their class or its enrollments
Take class roll each day and record attendance
Must be available for all days and times within an entire instruction session
Complete lesson plans for substitute instructor along with pertinent emergency information and procedures
Monitor the skills of all students throughout the class and record progress for future placement
Attend appropriate training sessions and staff meetings as scheduled
Perform other related duties as requested or assigned by the Site Coordinator or Aquatic Director
Assist in promoting all activities sponsored by Shawnee Parks & Recreation Department
Perform other related duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
Must be at least 15 years of age before May 31, 2026
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Automated External Defibrillator (AED), and Oxygen Administration certification, or the ability to obtain prior to the start of the pool season.
Hold current Swim Instructor Certification or the ability to complete the Shawnee Swim Instructor Training Program prior to employment.
Previous swim instruction/swimming pool work experience preferred.
Lifeguard/PA certification preferred.

Ability to complete 6-7 weeks of hands-on training in the Tiny Fins survival swim curriculum.

Working Conditions
Physical Environment
Work is conducted in an indoor aquatic facility with warm water pools designed for survival swim instruction. Exposure to humidity, chlorinated water, and wet surfaces is common. Frequent standing, walking on pool decks, bending, and lifting (such as assisting young swimmers) is required.
Physical Demands
Requires prolonged periods in the water, including demonstrating swimming techniques. Must have the ability to lift and support children in the water safely. Engaging with multiple students back-to-back requires stamina and energy.
Schedule & Work Hours
Lessons are 15 minutes long and run back-to-back, with short transition periods. Typically scheduled during morning and afternoon hours, depending on class demand. Punctuality is essential-arriving at least 15 minutes early is required to prepare for lessons.
Workplace Atmosphere
Fast-paced and highly interactive-requires strong communication with students, parents, and team members. Emphasis on positive reinforcement, patience, and encouragement to create a comfortable learning environment for children. Instructors are expected to maintain a professional and friendly demeanor at all times.
Safety & Compliance
