REQUIREMENTS: * Received formal swim instruction through accredited curriculum provider or a member of a swim club or varsity. PREFERENCES: * Swim lesson instruction and water exercise instruction. * Familiar with American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim levels and other Red Cross water safety courses and know how to use course materials effectively. * Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities will be accepted. * American Red Cross or Ellis & Associates Lifeguard Training Certification, American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification or equivalent, First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: * Teach and assist swim lessons to preschool, school age children and adults, levels 1-6. * Understand the Kroc Center Hawaii Aquatics program, including classes, swimming levels, skills taught in each level, and the requirements for passing each level. * Evaluate students and recommend appropriate classes for their skill levels. * Provide corrective and positive feedback to students to ensure learning and a positive atmosphere. * Cover all materials required in a class. Complete student evaluations, reports and records. Maintain confidentiality of all information and documents received. * Have all instructional equipment ready before lessons begin and put all equipment away at the end of lessons. * Communicate regularly with participants and parents. * Recognize distressed swimmers and provide the necessary assistance. * Know, understand and enforce all aquatic facility policies, rules and regulations. * Never leave students unattended. * Maintain a positive rapport and image with students, members and guests. * Keep the facilities clean, including pool, pool area, and locker rooms. * Follow and ensure adherence to The Salvation Army Policies and Procedures. * Maintain the Code of Ethics policy, which has been established for the Kroc Center Hawaii. * Attend staff meetings and other administrative meetings. * Maintain regular and punctual work attendance. Available to work a flexible schedule that includes working on weekends, holidays, and evenings. * Perform other duties as assigned. MENTAL DEMANDS: This position requires strong organizational skills and ability to multitask. The work will be in a fast-paced environment and must maintain poise under pressure. The position must maintain a self-motivated and self-directed schedule able to take projects from beginning through completion and respond to crisis situations in a calm and effective manner. This position must possess the self-discipline necessary to perform repetitive tasks without lowering quality of work, exercise good judgment and be comfortable taking initiative with projects. This position must be able to work with limited supervision, and work in a team setting with other professionals. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The candidate chosen for this position will have the ability to remain in the water ranging from 80-90 degrees for the duration of swim lessons (1-4 hours); support child weight in the water; recognize distressed swimmers and those needing assistance and provide the necessary aid and able to communicate verbally and loudly across distances. May also be required to run, swim, paddle and walk long distances; stand and sit for long periods; uses hand to finger, handle, feel or operate lifesaving equipment. The position requires sitting; climbing and/or balancing; stooping, kneeling, bending, stretching, crouching and/or crawling; standing; walking; manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; use of vision; driving a vehicle; pushing/pulling/lifting/carrying 50-75 pounds and occasionally more than 75 pounds with assistance. COMMUNICATION DEMANDS: The position requires talking to co-workers, clients, vendors; requires written communication to and from co-workers, clients, vendor; talking on the telephone; requires responding to written or verbal requests of co-workers, clients, and vendors; requires training/giving verbal and written instructions; requires receiving verbal and written instructions; requires writing/composing written language; requires reading; requires visiting/working at other worksites; requires communication via the latest technologies. DESCRIPTION OF WORK ENVIRONMENT: The employee regularly works under outdoor weather conditions, is routinely exposed to the sun, may be exposed to extreme heat; works on uneven and/or slippery surfaces and is periodically exposed to hazardous conditions/situations. Attendance at trainings and conferences, both in Hawaii and on the mainland, may be required. Extensive travel is possible, including air travel, driving long distances, night driving, overnight travel, and extended travel of three days or more.
