POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Aquatics Director, The SwimInstructor provides direct leadership, instruction, and motivation for students in swimming classes. Greets everyone by using names whenever possible; extends thanks whenever appropriate; building relationships is always a priority. The position is responsible for ensuring that the mission, purpose, image and core values of the YMCA of Greater Hartford is conveyed.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Instructs swimming lessons in accordance with the YMCA of the USA and YMCA of Greater Hartford Swim Lessons Program Guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly.
Builds effective, authentic relationships with students and parents; helps them connect with each other and the YMCA. Encourages parent involvement and identifies potential volunteers.
Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refers students and parents to other programs.
Maintains records as required (i.e., attendance, progress reports, etc.).
Attends staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
Organizes and puts away needed class equipment. Reports damaged equipment.
Trains and supervises class aides as assigned.
Provides a lesson plan for any substitute.
Promotes the YMCA mission and demonstrate YMCA Character Development to all members.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Must be 16 years of age or older.
Current YMCA swiminstructor certificate or equivalent preferred.
CPR for the Professional Rescuer Certification (infant, child and adult), Oxygen Admin and First Aid certification preferred.
In addition to the above requirements, it is expected that a SwimInstructor will bring to his/her position maturity, responsibility, positive values and sincere interest in working with people.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Master's degree in chemistry or a closely related field (granted by start date).
Experience teaching laboratory courses.
Demonstrated experience with current safety practices, waste and hazard management, and environmental health and safety practices.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience instructing laboratory courses other than general chemistry.
Written and verbal communication skills, demonstrated by engaging with undergraduate and/or graduate students, faculty members, and providing student mentorship.
APPOINTMENT TERMS
This position is a full-time, nine (9)-month position for an initial duration of one year, renewable for up to up to a maximum of five (5) such one-year appointments, contingent on satisfactory performance, mutual agreement, and availability of funds, with a start date of August 23, 2025.
The successful candidate's primary academic appointment will be at the Storrs Campus.
