    Aquatics/Lifeguard LEARN TO SWIM INSTRUCTOR Position:……………AQ-06 Salary Schedule:…Non-Exempt, Part-Time, $13.29 hour, DOE;DOQ Last Update:………June 2009 POSITION SUMMARY Under the supervision of the Aquatics Director, Assistant Manager, and Shift Supervisors, a Learn to Swim Instructor is a non-exempt position under FLSA, responsible for the safety and well-being of Learn to Swim participants at the Turner Aquatic Center. Performs swimming lesson instructor duties as assigned by the Aquatics Director, Assistant Manager or Shift Supervisor. This employee's work schedule occurs during Turner Aquatic Center learn to swim classes. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Monitors swimmers for safety associated with LTS Instructor duties. Completes swim lesson reports and records assigned by the Aquatics Director/Assistant Manager/Shift Supervisor. Assists with preparation and clean up for LTS classes. Follows safety directives established by the City, County, State, Federal, Turner Recreation Commission and Turner USD #202. Skilled in verbal communication with both children and adults. Develop and implement swimming lesson plans effectively. Maintain positive relationships with students, parents and community patrons. Model the major strokes and other swimming techniques in and out of the water as established by the American Red Cross. Employee must maintain reliable transportation MARGINAL FUNCTIONS Obey and comply with all Turner Recreation and Turner Aquatic Center policies. Provide first aid or emergency CPR if necessary. Work collaboratively with other staff members and management. Maintain swim lesson equipment and supplies in proper working order. Report to swim lessons appropriately dressed and ready to begin class promptly. Maintain progress reports. Mobility to handle up to 8 children in the water at one time. Performs other duties necessary or assigned. POSITION REQUIREMENTS Experience: None required but is preferred. Must be at least 15 years of age. Education: Must be able to read, write, and count. License/Certification: Current CPR and First Aid certification is required. Must possess current Water Safety Instructor certification from the American Red Cross. Technical Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: The employee must have the ability to establish successful working relationships with co-workers, volunteers, and the public and use good professional judgment, honesty, and integrity in decision making. The ability to enforce department policies and procedures and to interpret written instructions and manuals is required. Employee must be able to interact with the public in a professional manner and have verbal and written communication skills. Problem Solving: Independent problem solving is key. This employee encounters problems with participant conflicts, equipment malfunctions, and citizen complaints. Decision Making: Independent decision making is a key factor. This employee makes decisions about the safety of patrons as well as the ability to perform LTS Instructor tasks in the most efficient manner possible. Supervision: This employee is subject to supervision from the Aquatics Director, Assistant Manager, and Shift Supervisors and is responsible for supervision over LTS participants. Financial Accountability: This employee is responsible for aquatic facility equipment. Personal Relations: Daily contact with the general public, co-workers, and supervisory personnel.
