In 1940, restrictions placed on foreign insurers led to the founding under United States law of a company that was to become the North American Reinsurance Corporation and that took over the major part of the business of Swiss Re's United States branch.
1940: The predecessor to the North American Reinsurance Corp. is created.
1960: The Swiss Insurance Training Centre is created to help train employees.
1968: Swiss Re begins publishing Sigma, a journal that analyzes trends in the industry.
1987: A finance holding company, Schweiz Allgemeine is established.
The company had purchased a majority interest this firm in 1988 from Swiss Bank Corp., Swiss National Insurance Co., and Zurich Insurance Co.
1988: Swiss Re acquires the Harald Quant Group's 50 percent holding in the Augsburger Aktienbank.
In 1995, Swiss Re secured a 53 percent increase in net income over the previous year, due in part to its successful restructuring.
During 1997, the company took 100 percent control of Unione Italiana de Riassicurazione and renamed it Swiss Re Italia.
While 1999 proved to be the second-least profitable year for reinsurers across the board, Swiss Re continued to fare well.
During 2001, the company also announced plans to purchase Lincoln Re, a business of Lincoln National Corp., for $2 billion.
On 31 October 2008, Swiss Re completed a £762 million acquisition of Barclays PLC’s subsidiary Barclays Life Assurance Company Ltd.
In June 2014, the company through Admin Re acquired the UK pensions business of HSBC Life (UK) Limited worth £4.2 billion.”
