Switcher job description

• Cycle counting
• Meeting USDA, HACCP, GMFP, and Company standards
• Generation of required inbound and outbound documentation.
• Thorough understanding of Export documentation/process requirements.
• Unloading pallet trailers, Sort, and load pallets to be repaired and or washed. Load from freezer to cooler for customer orders.
• Load and unload product to and from offsite storage facilities. Fill out pallet exchange forms.
• Pick up fresh combos from the production drop-off for shipment or placement into the pre-stage cooler.
• Daily Inspection log performed. Include but are limited to the following: lights, mirrors, windshields inc/wipers, tires (visual condition), brakes (feel of the pedal), fluid leaks, hydraulic 5th-wheel function, 5th-wheel pin-lock function, brake air-cable attachments
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

• Must be a High School Graduate.
• Must be detail oriented and work in a fast-paced environment.
• Must pass a basic math test.
• Must pass a written and driving industrial Lift Truck test and a driving test.
• Must have a valid Michigan Driver’s license and maintain one at all times (2 years of experience).
• General knowledge of the trailers used.
• Must be able to back in and pull out trailers from docks and buildings using side mirrors.
• Knowledge of the Yard Tractor instruments and controls: tractor brakes pressurize and release, trailer brakes pressurize and release, hydraulic 5th-wheel lift, 5th-wheel locking pin engage and release, transmission selector.
• Must be able to effectively communicate both orally and in writing at all levels within the organization
• Must be able to speak, read, and write in the English language.

• Must be able to physically perform the essential functions of the role as outlined.
• Physically able to climb in and out of cab w/o assistance.
• Capable of properly maneuvering through tight areas and obstacles throughout the site.
• Must be able to twist, bend, reach, and lift up to 50 pounds for 8 hours or the duration of the shift.
• Must be able to safely operate an Industrial Lift Truck.

Must be able to work in cooler, freezer, and blast freezer environments

Monday thru Friday 5:00 am to 2:30 pm. Possible Daily and weekend overtime

Pay Range: $20.24 - $21.80, depending on experience

Rate Frequency: Hourly

Schedule: 1st Shift, Monday - Friday from 6:00AM to 2:30PM (Weekends as per business needs)

Job Overview

The Switcher I is responsible for the transport of full and empty trailers between the docks and the designated drop parking locations in the "Trailer Yard" to support the inbound unloading and the outbound loading warehouse operations in a safe, accurate, and efficient manner. This position will perform inspections of the trailers for any discovered issues of mechanical maintenance needs before moving, tagging out any trailers requiring attention, and communicating any discovered issues to warehouse management and, or fleet maintenance. This position may also occasionally be required to operate a forklift and, or other PIT equipment within the warehouse.

Duties & Responsibilities

* Transport full and empty trailers between the docks and designated drop parking spaces
* Inspect trailers before transporting to identify issues of mechanical maintenance needs and, or potential safety hazards
* Maintain organization of the trailer yard to ensure the efficient and safe transport of trailers
* Maintain cleanliness and safety of work area and warehouse
* Perform other tasks including pallet building as determined and requested by management
* May perform duties other than switching as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

* Require continuously climbing steps to get in and out of Switcher Tractor
* Ability to read, write, and use a radio
* Ability to work in a fast-paced atmosphere while walking and repetitively lifting 30 lbs
* Ability to lift, up to 75 lbs
* Ability to collaborate within a team environment
* Ability to coordinate and organize efficient and dependable warehouse processes
* Ability to adapt to needs of role in different work areas throughout the workday and meet minimum expectations of those different work areas
* Ability to read and interpret instructions from a computer screen

* Ability to work while exposed to the elements and in a noisy and non-climate controlled (Hot in summer, cold in winter) environment

Minimum Qualifications

* High school diploma or GED
* Knowledge acquired through 1 to up to 3 years of work experience

Preferred Qualifications

PIT (Powered Industrial Truck) Certification including Pallet Jack, Forklift, Double Forklift, and Switch Tractor.

**Job Summary**

Responsible for the movement of trailers to and from the unload / load doors and throughout the yard. May also be responsible for the physical loading, unloading and/or sorting of packages by hand, including lifting, pushing, pulling, carrying and placing, in a safe and efficient manner.

**Essential Functions**

• Performs trailer switches defined as hooking and moving a parked trailer from the yard to a load/unload door or hooking and moving a trailer from a door to the yard.

• Communicates with management and/or central control to coordinate trailer movements in the yard.

• Documents trailer moves using the Yard Management System (where available) or switcher cards.

• Performs pre- and post-trip inspections on switcher equipment.

• Understands and demonstrates effective yard switching safety processes and procedures.

In addition to the above essential functions, Switchers may also be required to perform Package Handler essential functions as follows:

• Utilizes "hand-to-surface" methods for all package handling.

• Loads and unloads packages onto or from delivery vehicles, trailers, conveyor system carts and load gratings.

• Lifts, carries, pushes and pulls packages on a continuous and repetitive basis for approximate shifts of two to four hours.

• Determines the appropriate conveyor system by scanning packages, reading labels and charts, verifying numbers and memorizing information and sorts packages accordingly.

**Minimum Experience**

No experience required; six (6) months of experience as a package handler or switching/CDL operator experience preferred.

**Required Skills, Abilities and / or Licensure**

•Must have a valid driver's license and maintain a Department of Transportation (DOT) file.

•Ability to understand and follow instruction regarding work duties and safety methods.

• Ability to discern numbers and information in order to sort packages correctly.

•Ability to use basic tools and equipment such as skate wheel rollers, dock carts, hand-held scanners, chutes and unloading devices.

•Strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work well in a fast-paced team environment.
