Margaret Meister is president and chief executive officer of Symetra Financial Corporation and president of its insurance subsidiaries. She is also a member of the company’s board of directors.

Ms. Meister joined Symetra in 1988 as an actuarial student. She was appointed chief actuary in 2004 and chief financial officer (CFO) in February 2006, assuming responsibility for the company’s financial strategy and operations. She became president and chief executive officer in February 2018.

As a member of the company’s executive leadership team, Ms. Meister played a principal role in Symetra’s initial public offering in 2010, as well as its successful acquisition by Sumitomo Life in 2016. In addition to her responsibilities as CFO, she served as chief information officer from 2014 to 2016, leading the Information Technology department during the transition of the company’s data center. She also has had responsibility for Symetra’s brand strategy development through her oversight of the company’s marketing, advertising and communications programs.

Ms. Meister is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries and a member of the American Academy of Actuaries. She graduated from Whitman College with a bachelor’s degree in math. Ms. Meister is a member of the board of directors of the American Council of Life Insurers (ACLI) and also serves on the boards of the United Way of King County and the Washington Roundtable.

Pros of working at Symetra

They recently did implement a work from home plan; however, lots of companies already had that, and now it's the new "normal" anyway.

Cons of working at Symetra

Management is in a very obvious clique, promoting amongst themselves. Nearly everyone said their favorite part about working there is the "people," but those saying that had either been working there for a long time and were in the "management clique" or literally just couldn't come up with anything else. Yes, having a great team is essential, but companies should also value and promote other aspects to create an awesome workplace. What about collaboration? autonomy? culture? challenges? helping others? Innovation/new ideas/change management concepts are very much needed at this company, and publicly, they say this is what they're striving for, yet working here felt like being stuck in a stuffy bygone era. They really need to actually embrace what they're promoting--change is ok! new ideas are ok! be willing to take some risks on a few things, like new people and new ideas; otherwise your company is going to quickly get left behind, by the industry and by your employees.

Symetra benefits

Benefits package is very nice, all things considered. No free parking (I know it's Bellevue, but c'mon!), no amenities in the office (make sure you bring your own coffee and eating utensils!), slow acceptance for new technology. Reportedly, there's an annual bonus. Some tuition assistance. A few discounts for places in the area.
