The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Syracuse University seeks applicants for a Postdoctoral Researcher to assist in the management of the Noble Gas Geochemistry laboratory and perform noble gas geochemistry research. This is a fully funded, full-time, one-year position, subject to renewal. The candidate is expected to work in person.
The Noble Gas Geochemistry laboratory contains two state-of-the-art noble gas mass spectrometers (a Helix SFT and an Argus VI) and two extraction and purification lines (one for fluids and one for rocks). The Noble Gas Geochemistry laboratory will be able to analyze the full suite of noble gases in gas, water, and rock samples. The candidate will conduct experimental noble gas work in shallow and deep groundwater, natural gas, and rock samples. The candidate will be expected to collaborate with faculty members in ongoing research projects with the possibility to conduct independent research. The successful candidate will also have the option to participate in teaching, including lectures and laboratory teaching of both undergraduate and graduate students.
Applicants should also have a demonstrated record of research and publication and hold a PhD in geochemistry or a related field before starting this position.

Job Specific Qualifications

* Experience with noble gas (or gas source) mass spectrometry, maintaining ultrahigh vacuum systems, programming in LabVIEW (or Python) and Qtegra, excellent written and oral communication skills, and a track record in academic publications.
* Solid knowledge of noble gas analysis procedures is desired but not required.

* Run samples and troubleshoot noble gas mass spectrometers.
* Build computational models of noble gas geochemistry results.
* Communicate results clearly both in oral and written formats, including talks, poster sessions, and journal articles.

Project Overview
The successful candidate will develop machine learning models to downscale (super-resolution) large-scale climate model outputs to the sub-kilometer scale, enabling actionable insights for health-related interventions at the local scale. Advanced ML techniques, including generative models and probabilistic methods, will be essential in meeting these goals.
In addition, the project incorporates demographic, mobility, and gender data to build more robust, realistic models of climate-sensitive interventions, requiring innovative approaches for multi-modal data integration.
Key Responsibilities
Develop and implement advanced ML algorithms, including generative models, for downscaling climate data.
Work with large geospatial datasets and locally collected (single point) measurements.
Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams from Europe and Africa and engage with stakeholders in Senegal, Ethiopia, and Kenya.
Travel to West Africa once a year to attend annual meetings, work closely with local collaborators and ensure solutions meet regional needs.

Our group utilizes a suite of numerical frameworks:
Stellar evolution codes (e.g., MESA for single and binary evolution),
Hydrodynamics and radiation-hydrodynamics codes (e.g., STELLA, SNEC, OctoTiger), and
Radiation transport frameworks (SuperNu and our in-house variant, SuperLite, TARDIS).
The Postdoc will play a leading role in advancing these methods, including extending the SuperLite code to 2D/3D geometries for radiation transport in non-symmetric circumstellar interaction scenarios. The position will also involve close collaboration with Los Alamos National Lab (LANL) partners, mentoring graduate students, contributing to proposal preparation, and disseminating results at conferences and through peer-reviewed publications.
Key responsibilities for the postdoctoral position:
Assist with development, implementation, and run large-scale simulations of massive star evolution, supernova explosions, and stellar mergers using MESA, OctoTiger, STELLA, and SuperLite.
Assist in development and extension of the SuperLite radiation transport framework to handle 2D/3D geometries and non-homologous outflows.
Generate synthetic light curves and spectra for direct comparison with observational data from JWST, Vera Rubin Observatory (LSST), and other surveys.

Department Information:
The CM Department and its related research centers have 19 faculty and 10 staff members. This growing collection of faculty and staff combines their strengths and talents to meet the teaching, research, and outreach of the Department. They are actively supported by a large construction industry base that has gifted funds for endowed chairs, professorships, scholarships, and discretionary funding. There are 1,619 students across four undergraduate degree programs (campus and online) that are studying to major, or intending to major, in construction or facilities management. In addition, we have 132 graduate students working towards a Master of Science in CM (campus and online) and 60 working towards their Ph.D. in CM. The LSU CM undergraduate and master's programs are accredited by the American Council for Construction Education (ACCE). The CM Department houses three federally funded centers: Industrial Training and Assessment Center (ITAC) and the Commercial Assessment Center funded by the US Department of Energy, and the Region 6's University Transportation Center (Tran-SET) funded by the US Department of Transportation. There are 80+ research grants and sub-grants within the CM Department averaging around $3.5 million annually. Responsibilities: The Postdoctoral Researcher will work with collaborating institutions on the DoD funded MURI: Complexity, Nonlocality, and Uncertainty in Heterogeneous Solids.
