The best certifications for a system safety engineer are Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP), and Certified Safety and Health Manager (CSHM).
System safety engineer certifications demonstrate your competency as a system safety engineer to employers. However, not all system safety engineer certifications provide the same value.
Below is a list of the best system safety engineer certifications. Obtaining a system safety engineer certification will give you a leg up when you apply for jobs and increase your potential salary.
| Rank | System safety engineer certification | Organization |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Certified Safety Professional (CSP) | BCSP |
| 2 | Certified Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP) | INCOSE |
| 3 | Certified Safety and Health Manager (CSHM) | ISHM |
| 4 | Engineer In Training Certification (EIT) | NCEES |
| 5 | Certified Manufacturing Engineer (CMfgE) | SME |
CSP candidates must have professional safety experience. The exact number of years depends on their degree(s) and if they hold OHST/CLCS or CHST certification. BCSP has a broad definition of safety. Professional-level work experience in safety, health, environmental protection, fire protection, ergonomics, radiation protection and industrial hygiene is considered professional safety experience.
Targeted towards systems engineers with five or more years of systems engineering work experience
The CSHM program recognizes the safety and health professionals who demonstrate knowledge of health and safety management skills and techniques through examination and experience.
The EIT Certification, which is formally known as the Engineer In Training Certification, is simply a document, a number, granted by the individual’s state engineering board after they pass the Engineer In Training Exam. The Engineer in Training Exam (EIT Exam) is the first of two exams you will take as you move towards obtaining your Professional Engineering License (PE). This exam, which you may also hear referred to as the Fundamentals of Engineering exam (FE Exam), is developed and administered in all states (and a number of locations outside the US) by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES). The FE Exam is offered to eligible students year-round in four different testing windows.
Professionals who earn a CMfgE demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of manufacturing processes and practices. Pursuing a CMfgE certification requires a minimum of 8 years of combined manufacturing-related education and/or work experience, including a minimum of 4 years of work experience. A CMfgT with a minimum of 7 years manufacturing-related work experience and/or education also qualifies.
The best system safety engineer certification is Certified Safety Professional (CSP). The Certified Safety Professional (CSP) is awarded by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals. This certification is great to have as it shows an improvement in your competency to perform your role. You can earn this certification at the beginning of your career, as it often doesn't require a minimum education level and work experience.
