In 1946, Nick Tacony invested his entire savings in used machines, motors and parts and began a business selling and servicing sewing machines from the basement of his home.
After completing his college degree in business administration and four years in the United States Air Force, Ken Tacony joined his father's business in 1970.
In 1985 Tacony became a licensee of Simplicity sewing machines to tap into the market for less expensive sewing machines, priced under $300.
Founded in 1985, CFR manufactured a state-of-the art line of high-end commercial carpet cleaning equipment.
In 1989 it formed the Tacony Sewing Central sales division.
In 1991, it acquired Blakeman's to enter the wholesale floor care parts and equipment field.
1996: Elna USA is acquired.
Tacony now transferred all of the manufacturing for Simplicity and Riccar vacuums to St James, then in 1999 bought out its partner.

Whether scrapping would ever have a major impact on Tacony's revenues, which grew to some $150 million in 2003, remained to be seen.
Aside from embroidery, there was another growing hobby in America that might have an influence on Tacony's future: "scrapping." Estimated as a $2.5 billion industry in 2004, scrapping involved the decoration of scrapbooks that contained family photos and other memorabilia.
