1947
The retail chain began in 1947 as a singular storefront in Hingham, founded by Rudolf and Nancy Talbot, who saw the post-war potential of promoting shopping as a suburban interest rather than strictly a city pursuit.
The company got its start in New England in 1947 and remained a small regional chain for nearly 30 years before it was purchased by General Mills, which undertook its nationwide expansion.
1948
In 1948, the Talbots launched a direct mail business by distributing 3,000 fliers to names obtained from The New Yorker magazine.
1950
By 1950, their business had outgrown its first location, and they moved two blocks to an old, white clapboard house that remains the mother store.
1951
1951 , American progressive journalist, bestselling author and media entrepreneur.
1952
Officially launched in 1952, the catalog is responsible for much of the chain s revenue.
1970
1970 Corporate offices move to 175 Beal Street.
1973
In 1973, they sold the company, consisting of a growing catalog enterprise and five stores, to General Mills.
1980
Also in 1980, Talbots established a toll-free telephone number to make it easier for customers to order from its catalog.
1980 Talbots expands beyond New England.
1984
In 1984 Talbots expanded the range of its merchandise offerings when it introduced clothing in petite sizes in both its stores and catalog.
1988
To better serve catalog customers, Talbots opened a new catalog fulfillment and merchandise distribution center in Lakeville, Massachusetts, in January 1988.
When General Mills divested its Specialty Retail Division in 1988, Talbots was acquired by JUSCO Co.
1989
1989 International sourcing operation opens in Hong Kong.
1993
Acquired about 25 years later by General Mills, Talbots became a public company in 1993 and is now owned by Sycamore Partners, a private equity firm.
1993 Talbots is listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
1998
1998 The 'Talbots Woman' is introduced for large-sized women.
2019
Bollywood star Sushant Singh Rajput, last seen in the 2019 Netflix film Drive, was found dead Sunday in his Mumbai residence.
